The Vermont Workers Center lost a $30,000 grant from a Catholic group because it would not take a stance against abortion and assisted suicide as part of its "Healthcare is a Human Right" campaign.
"It's a major challenge for us, $30,000, we make it go a long way," Vermont Workers Center Director James Haslam said.
The money represents a quarter of the group's total budget. The center has received the grant in years past, but it must be approved by the Catholic Diocese of Burlington every year.
The Vermont Workers Center planned on using the grant to help fund the health care campaign this year. But the Church wanted the group to take a stance against abortion and assisted suicide before it allocated the money.
"In order for the Catholic Church to be involved you would have to indicate with that human right war the right to life and natural death," Msgr. Peter Routhier said.
The Vermont Workers' Center would did not take that step and the funding was not allocated.
"It was an unfortunate and sad situation for us to loose a huge portion of our budget because what we have found is that health care is a human right is something the vast majority of Vermonters feel strongly about," Haslam said.
The church argues its position is clear.
"We have to protect life from its moment of conception, we have to allow it to natural death, and because the guarantees could not be placed there we could not support, the church could not support that type of endeavor," Routhier said.
The workers center is asking its members to donate money to bridge the funding gap.
Good news!
Take a stand and take the money
Take no stand, get no money.
How simple can it get?
When will they sue the diocese, do you think?
Some encouraging news, at least. The dread “Catholic [In Name Only] Charities” has been funding pro-abortion left-wing things for decades, but Catholics have gotten sick of it and many are not dropping a dime in that second collection. So that may have had some effect, too.
What time does the Clerk of Court’s office open up?
OK, which Freeper is editor at this little station?
I’m suspicious of the name. Anything with “Workers” in it reeks of socialism to me.
"How do I feel about Dr.Tiller no longer being on this planet? Pretty damn good. I am NOT going to pretend, even for one fleeting moment, that I feel in the least bit saddened by the fact that an infanticidal maggot no longer wastes our precious oxygen. Remember, were talking about late term abortion infanticide here, a procedure so barbarian and savage that only a pisslamic fundamentalist could fail to be revolted by it. Were talking about pulling an almost or entirely to term baby halfway out, jamming scissors into its skull and sucking out its brains, then throwing the mangled corpse away like a used paper towel. If you dont consider that one of the most singularly disgusting, barbarian and inexcusable acts known to man, then youre probably reading the wrong websites and if you expect me to feel the least bit bad that one of its infamous practitioners is roasting in Hell as we speak, then you dont know me very well. You dont know me at all."
........And there's more where that came from. Check the "Rott" out.
NYer has that graphic! And a Catholic ping list
That’s not really true.
Here in Detroit “Catholic Charities” has become CSA. It’s done like a tax lobbied on each parish.
They MUST give 150.00 per family whether it comes from the CSA envelopes or not.
Take a stand while you still can. Conservatives are about to lose every bit of free speech they have. The Obama Administration is on a full assault against conservative vaules. Piece by piece conservative thought will be considered hate speech and groups which espouse these beliefs will be considered terrorists. Just wait to see the BS that ozzes out of the fed’s Tiller investigation.
Piper. Pays. Tune.
Tough.
That’s terrible! There are some Catholic Charities offices that aren’t that bad, of course, and provide money for things like foster care, etc. Of course, there was the one in W VA where the foster care agency contracted by them was taking the girls off for abortions...
I think Catholic Charities needs close monitoring. I hope your diocese has somebody good in charge of their activities.
It’s Detroit. The fox is in the henhouse.
Amen!
Tough cookies. Talk to the false messiah about a bail out. He does not want the Catholic Church involved in any health care decisions any how.
