Boys who have a so-called "warrior gene" are more likely to join gangs and also more likely to be among the most violent members and to use weapons, a new study finds.
"While gangs typically have been regarded as a sociological phenomenon, our investigation shows that variants of a specific MAOA gene, known as a 'low-activity 3-repeat allele,' play a significant role," said biosocial criminologist Kevin M. Beaver of Florida State University.
In 2006, the controversial warrior gene was implicated in the violence of the indigenous Maori people in New Zealand, a claim that Maori leaders dismissed.
But it's no surprise that genes would be involved in aggression. Aggression is a primal emotion like many others, experts say, and like cooperation, it is part of human nature, something that's passed down genetically. And almost all mammals are aggressive in some way or another, said Craig Kennedy, professor of special education and pediatrics at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, whose research last year suggested that humans crave violence just like they do sex, food or drugs.

Now this? I just read an article about a group of genetic scientists who claim that diarrhea is hereditary.
Maybe some boys with warrior genes wind up joining the military instead of joining gangs.
Wow.
There is, apparently, a gene for everything.
Still waiting for them to identify the “gay” gene, though.
"Warriors....come out and play-yay...."
“I just read an article about a group of genetic scientists who claim that diarrhea is hereditary.”
There may be something to that. Kids for liberal families do have verbal diarrhea.
Broken link?
I’m encouraging my 7 yo son to become an ice cream taster or play tennis or any other softie thing I can think of. He says he wants to be a Navy Seal, but mom says NO! He says he’ll bring me home souvenirs. I tell him I only want him to bring home HIM!
Does this mean we have to let gang members marry each other?
“Now this? I just read an article about a group of genetic scientists who claim that diarrhea is hereditary.”
We DEFINITELY know that diarrhea of the mouth is hereditary and contagious—most in Congress and the media have it. The only problem is that this disease is coupled with a constipation of ideas!
Oh boy are you going to get an earful. And rightly so.
That's that Y chromosome?
I wonder what gene it is that makes a boy want to become a community organizer. The Thugs gene?
“M’am, your fetus has a ‘warrior gene.’ We have to abort it.”
Where I come from those are not called warrior genes, they are called cojones.
My commie lib ex had me take my son to see “Saving Private Ryan” so that he could see the horror of war. That was ten years ago and he grew up with little influence from me. Well, he’s getting into the SEAL program now.
I suspect this is the aggressive assh-le gene... Gang members don't have what it takes to be warriors.
Does it give them a low sloping forehead, a heavy brow and beady eyes? Did phrenologists have it right after all?
You’ve heard about the planned sequel/remake, right?
Supposedly, Michael Beck will make a return/cameo.
When I was about 8, I decided I would be in the Green Berets, my dad even brought me home a real Green Beret, that fit me, from a friend of his in Vietnam. I did join the service but dad talked me out of the Army, he was Airborne in the Korean war....;)
