I beg to differ. You can learn superb leadership skills in a street gang, and you can learn superb teamwork, discipline, strategy and tactics as well. In the absence of a proper outlet for a warrior-in-the-making, a street gang is where they will naturally gravitate toward.
A large number of street gang members in New Zealand grow up and go on to have respectable military careers. A large percentage of those would be Maori — the group that supposedly has the “warrior gene”.
Think again. The DOJ released a report 2 years ago that suggested the number of soldiers with gang ties was several magnitudes larger than previously thought. SoCal police departments and county sheriffs have also been reporting that gang members returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan have been bringing the benefits of their training and experience back to the gangs.
