We knew that Sonia Sotomayor had appeared at La Raza sponsored events; now we know that Sotomayor joined the National Council of La Raza as a member. And this was not just a youthful piece of radicalism that Sotomayor later outgrew, either, as The Hill reports:
Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor was a member of the National Council of La Raza for six years, according to her Senate questionnaire released Wednesday.Sotomayor, who would be the first Latina Supreme Court justice, was a member of the group form 1998 to 2004.
Sotomayor joined NCLR while on the federal appellate court. Oddly, though, the NCLR didnt mention her six-year membership in their group in their endorsement of the nomination last week:
Today is a monumental day for Latinos. Finally, we see ourselves represented on the highest court in the land, said Janet Murguía, NCLR President and CEO. Judge Sotomayors story personifies the American Dream for so many Latinos in this country.By nominating someone with the experience, background, and superb legal credentials of Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama has made an excellent choice for the entire country, added Murguía. The President wanted a justice who not only is a respected jurist, but also understands how the law affects the lives of everyday people. Judge Sotomayor embodies those qualities.
We commend President Obama for making this historic appointment and for recognizing that excellence and diversity are not mutually exclusive, concluded Murguía.
Did La Raza not know that Sotomayor had been a member, or did they just think it might be best to keep quiet about it?

Cannot understand; why/how. ..it is; that the La Raza is only mentioned in passing when it comes to ‘judging’ Sotomayor. All attention being focused on her ‘Latina woman’ judgment comment. The La Raza connection is as threatening; if not moreso.
La Raza, like Obama, wants to turn the US back into a third world sewer. Sotomayor is the perfect pick to assist in doing this....
WTH is going on?!
I’ve also been wondering, both Souter and Sotomayor are single. Is this the closeted gay seat? I’m not even knocking it (yet) I’m just asking.
ping
what is la raza? is it just an organization for latinos? if so, what is wrong with that?
a member for only 6 years? I’d think it would have been longer.
ok, thanks for schooling me. more socialism
Get used to it. There has traditionally been a Jewish seat (now there are Ginsburg & Breyer). Starting with Thurgood Marshall, there was an expectation of a black seat. When Ginsburg leaves, there will have to be someone to fill the ACLU seat. Now we have a “Latina” seat (if there’s a difference, we may need a “Hispanic” seat as well). Add a gay seat and eventually a Muslim seat, and a “majority” of the Court will be guaranteed to be “minorities.” We’ll be reduced to agitating for a token honky hetero male seat.
La Raza means "The Race". Their motto is, (translated) For the Race Everything, for Others Nothing. For La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada.
It's about a racist as you can get. Sotomayor is/was a member. Those comments about a "wise Latina" didn't appear out of thin air.
You mean she isn’t still a member?
When you take this information with her ruling in the New Haven case and her statement (made twice) that a Hispanic woman would make better decisions than a white man, the only conclusion that one can draw is that Soni Sotomayor is a racist.
So now she’s not? Yeah, right.
LaRaza with a foothold on the Supreme Court. Just sad.
I have heard that although "la raza" literally means "the race", this expression is usually used to mean "the people", and thus is not necessarily a racist expression. Perhaps someone who knows more about Spanish idioms can comment.
Please especially note the warning at the end. Misleading about them, or confusing the NCLR with other groups or concepts with similar names only helps them. I've seen many people help them by making those mistakes.
