U.S. combat troops to leave all Iraqi cities

U.S. combat forces will vacate all Iraqi cities on schedule by the end of this month, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq said Tuesday, including the still violent insurgent holdout of Mosul.

That's not a bad idea. They did a decent (if chaotic) job with Basrah.
Mosul's my old stomping ground, and it's pretty in comparison to the rest of urban Iraq. I think that the Iraqis are more than capable of policing it themselves, they're just not ones to do any work that someone else is doing for them. Once we pull out of Mosul, the powers that be in the Kurdish and Sunni tribes can enforce order. So could the central government, once they have no choice but to be responsible.
I'm torn on the matter. On one hand, I fear letting Iraqis run anything more complicated than a taxi. On the other, I know that our presence enables them to not have to deal with reality, and the only way they're going to step up is for us to step back. I guess there's only one way to find out if they're ready. It's not like we'll ever really know until we try.
