Obama condemns Muslim attack on Arkansas Army recruiters…not

President Obama announced his choice for Army Secretary this afternoon.

The news isn’t what he said in his statement about GOP Rep. John McHugh:

“As Secretary of the Army, he will ensure that our soldiers are trained and equipped to meet the full spectrum of challenges and threats of our time. And John [McHugh] shares my belief that a sustainable national security strategy must include a bipartisan consensus at home, and he brings patriotism and a pragmatism that has won him respect on both sides of the aisle. I look forward to working with him in the months and years ahead.”

The news is what he left out.

Not a word about the jihadi attack on the two Army recruiters in Arkansas. No condemnation of the heinous attack and senseless violence. No condolences for the families of the targeted men or praise for the military recruiters who have been under increasing attack on U.S. soil. No statements from the DOJ or Pentagon, either.

Nothing.

Why not tell people what is actually happening in the world? We saw this a couple of weeks ago, when the press only gingerly acknowledged that the malevolent though incompetent suspects in the synagogue bombing-conspiracy case in New York were converts to Islam. How is the public served by this kind of silence? The extremist Christian beliefs of George Tiller’s alleged murderer are certainly relevant to that case, and no one in my profession is hesitant to discuss them. Why the hesitancy to talk about the motivations of the man who allegedly killed Pvt. William Long?

Notice the difference in treatment between a killing that advances The Agenda - Tiller's - and one that does not. That's all that's going on here. One can be used to demonize political opponents, one cannot. One is a stage from which the usual sanctimonious hectoring can be done, one isn't.

And one - Long's - reminds us that Bush's post-9/11 record is now better than 0bama's in terms of attacks on U.S. soil. And that's the thing that's spiking the story.

Great way for the commander in chief to stand behind and support his men. Even he couldn’t have sincerely worked up the outrage he felt over Dr. Tiller’s murder, at least a public word of sympathy would have been the decent and prudent reaction to the very public domestic murder of one of his soldiers. Nothing President Obama has done or not done so far has outraged me so much as his callous silence in this case.

Question here: Is there any legal reason why Armed Forces personnel on duty at recruiting offices can not wear side-arms? I know I’ve seen MP’s and SP’s wearing them but just can’t remember if it was stateside or foreign.

Legal reason? No. But, it can be a logistical nightmare for a dozen reasons. First and foremost, you have to have a very secure place to store the weapons. That "place" has to be wired for an alarm, and it's an alarm system with some very specific and expensive minimums.

There are many, many more problems that are just to detailed to go into here. But, as a retired Marine Corps officer, with independent duty experience where we were required to have access to weapons, I can promise you that it's logistically and practically infeasible to have all our recruiting stations armed. It would just cause more problems than it would fix, IMHO.

They can be armed, no problem. Without being deputized or requested by a state governor, they can't engage in law enforcement activities (though MPs can enforce UCMJ for other servicemen of course), but they can be armed for self defense. Whether the army actually wants every fresh private on leave carrying sidearms around is a different matter. Generally not (not supervised, often quite young, only recently in the service etc). (These guys were privates talking about their experience in the service with prospective recruits). The professional recruiters could easily be armed though.

Does anyone know of a link that provides a transcript of the daily White House briefing? From what I understand, the Bush administration used to publish this on whitehouse.gov, but the Obama administration has stopped this practice.

We know that Obama hasn't issued a statement, but I would be very curious if any members of our "4th estate" have asked the question.
