New Laser Treatment Could Make Incandescent Bulbs as Efficient as Fluorescent
Daily Tech ^ | 6/2/09 | Jason Mick

New approach offers more pleasant light of traditional bulbs without the energy guilt

Thanks to a bit of ingenuity, Chunlei Guo, associate professor of optics at the University of Rochester, and his assistant Anatoliy Vorobyev have been able to squeeze out fluorescent-like energy performance from an incandescent light bulb. The breakthrough boils down to a laser treatment of the bulb's tungsten filament, a processing step which could one day become a standard in the light bulb industry.

A Chinese and a Russian.

Where are the American innovators?

Oh, that’s right.

They’re busy taking Hispanic, Black, and Gay and Lesbian studies.

Yeah, and incandescents are made in places other than China.

Most foreign post-docs (presumably, like this assistant) at universities are here LEGALLY. They actually bothered to fill out the paperwork and subjected themselves to security checks. I have no problem with that at all.

As far as Americans doing the research...well foreigners have dominated American research for the past 40 years. This is a problem with Americans, not the government. Its one key reason why India is doing well while we are not.

IOW, use light to make light bulbs better. Maybe the incandescent bulbs just needed a better role model (laser light) to make them try to be all they could be. /anthromorphising raving

Now THAT’S funny, I don’t care who ya’ are.

Personally, I like the fluorescent bulbs. I have one I keep on 24/7. I used to replace the old type bulbs every two weeks or so. I’ve replaced the fluorescent bulb once in 4 years.

Sounds like your line voltage is WAY too high, and may well damage bulbs fast. Figure a year or so. The mercury bulbs can start fires, among other things.

What a waste of time and money. Don't they know that our god (the U.S. Govt) has already decreed that incandescent bulbs cannot be improved and must be eliminated in favor of mercury bulbs? We must put a stop to waste like this. Our god has decreed it. /sarc

It hovers around 122 VAC most of the time, but sometimes it jumps around, especially during thunder storms. I live about 12 miles from the nearest main substation, and it doesn’t take much for the lines to pick up some noise. The fluorescent bulbs are a lot more forgiving in that respect.

I have all three of my computers and both of my televisions (and satellite receivers)on UPS’s.

Too late. The morons in Congress have already outlawed incandescent bulbs.

Actually, the gov’t has not outlawed incandescent bulbs, but energy inefficient bulbs. If these new techniques can be shown to have increased efficiency, then the treate bulbs will be hunky dory.

They are too busy watching American Idol or making deals on Wall Street to do the real productive work. It isn't fashionable in the elite circles. Anyway kudos to Guo and Vorobyev. I hope there's a future for this technology and this new bulb works out.
