LOS ANGELES A judge placed former "Columbo" star's Peter Falk in a conservatorship Monday to ensure his daughter could occasionally visit the ailing 81-year-old actor.
Falk's wife of more than 30 years, Shera, will remain in control of his personal care and affairs. Falk has advanced dementia, likely from Alzheimer's disease, one of his doctors testified Monday...

Shame to see anyone ailing in this manner. Falk has always been a favorite of mine - a very versatile and (IMHO) underrated performer. I always enjoyed Columbo, but Falk really shined (again, IMHO) in some of his movie roles. The In-Laws remains to this day one of the funniest films I've ever seen, and he was charming as the grandfather in the Princess Bride.
SERPENTINE SHEL! SERPENTINE!

I agree also. What a shame. I always got a good laugh outta him and enjoyed his acting. His character “Columbo” was just right for the time. Peter Falk, I wish you the best and will keep you in my prayers.
Yes, The In-Laws is one of my favorite comedies ever! Serpentine, Shel!
Well this is real sad news. I’m so sorry he’s ill with such a cruel disease. Columbo was probably the most popular detective show ever and probably one of the greatest TV shows ever. Falk was good in other roles as well.
I wish him and his family well.
Oh, just one more thing: God bless you, lieutenant.
Dementia from Alzheimers is a terrible way to spend your twilight years. My next door neighbor, who was a retired vet, had to be put away in a home by his family due to this same illness. It was a crying shame watching his home and all of his personal belongings being auctioned off to pay for his care.
I’ve always preferred Falk’s work with John Cassavetes (Woman Under the Influence, Husbands), but loved the Columbo episodes with Patrick McGoohan (who was a close personal friend of Falk’s in real life).
:-(
“Serpentine, Shel, serpentine!”
Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk.
Falk was one of the great underated comedians.
Sad.
And I see in the article another reference to a link between surgery (meaning anesthesia) and dementia.
I personally know of several cases of this occurring, including a much loved member of my immediate family who descended in Parkinson’s disease immediately after a lengthy surgery.
Anyone know if there have been any investigations of this?
Dang. Mrs. Reo and I watched him just last night in the Family Channel re-run of “The Princess Bride”. A delightful actor in a delightful film.
Prayers for Mr. Falk.
