Cheney Supports Gay Marriage

Cheney Supports Gay Marriage It's not surprising when Vice President Dick Cheney disagrees with President Obama. But it is surprising when he takes a more progressive position than the president.

Said Cheney: "I think that freedom means freedom for everyone. As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay, and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish. The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute to protect this, I don't support. I do believe that... historically the way marriage has been regulated is at the state level. It has always been a state issue and I think that is the way it ought to be handled, on a state-by-state basis... But I don't have any problem with that. People ought to get a shot at that."

I agree it should be done on a state by state basis.

I think everyone should be happy when they’re married...

Oh, you mean sodomite “marriage”...

It’s a classically conservative position to let freaks do whatever they want to themselves.

I won't argue with that Dick but it also has always been a moral issue.

Where’s the news there? That looks like a quote from his debate with John Edwards in 2004.

Umm... No.

That's a classically libertarian position. There's a difference.

Yes, gay marriage should be an issue left up to the states but that state right will be washed away once the SCOTUS finds a gay marriage ban in violation of the 14th Amendment.

A reasonable, states rights position at the end of the day.

But “I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish” is a bit on the stupid side. Polygamy? Brothers and sisters? Father and daughter? Cmon, Dick, you can do better than that.

true wisdom from Marge Simpson

This just proves that ANYBODY can say something idiotic.

“I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish”

They can (and do). What does this have to do with government marriage? Nothing! Stop confusing the issue. “Freedom” has nothing to do with it. Free society is seperate from status society. Gay people’s natural right to determine their own lives does not extend to forcing the rest of us to officially recognize them.

I DON’T support same sex marriage.

However, since the subject of marriage is NOT covered in the U.S. Constitution, I assume that means it’s a state issue, UNLESS you try to pass a constitutional amendment.

Same is true with abortion.

Well, you have to realize he has a lesbian daughter. Would you abandon your child in such a case or would you stand behind them and support them? I will give Dick Cheney a pass on this one. BTW, the you in this comment is to everyone not just to the person I replied to.
