Montana town offers to take Guantanamo prisoners

HARDIN, Mont. (AP) - On Capitol Hill, politicians are dead-set against transferring some of the world's most feared terrorists from Guantanamo to prisons on U.S. soil. But at City Hall in this impoverished town on the Northern Plains, the attitude is: Bring 'em on.

Hardin, a dusty town of 3,400 people so desperate that it built a $27 million jail a couple of years ago in the vain hope it would be a moneymaker, is offering to house hundreds of Gitmo detainees at the brand-new, never-used institution.

The medium-security jail was conceived as a holding facility for drunks and other scofflaws, but town leaders said it could be fortified with a couple of guard towers and some more concertina wire. Apart from that, it is a turnkey operation, fully outfitted with everything from cafeteria trays and sweatsocks to 88 surveillance cameras.

they should put it in private hands, in a RTW state with no state income tax.

talk about some economic stimulus!

If terrorists have to be here, this is a good place for them. Isolated, remote, and the townspeople know everyone, so strangers (ie, friends of terrorists) would stand out and be noticed. The prison can be beefed up to maximum security, with terrorists only (so the other prisoners won’t kill them), and they’ll loooooove Montana in the winter after sunny Gitmo.

Montana has an interesting history of ‘hemp rope justice’. Maybe they HAVE thought this through...

I would suggest these folks have no idea what they would be in for, if they did take the terrorists.

The press would swarm on the state officials like flies on poop. Attornies would come out of the woodwork seeking to represent the poor terrorists. The radical left would swarm the prison with a constant vigil seeking the fair treatment (read that release into the U.S. populace) or all the terrorists.

Code Pink would be swarming the their next patriotic cause.

Communist attorneys and the ACLU would dedicate their and tax free funds to spring the terrorists. They would discover information in the process and provide it to terrorist organizations. Code pink would join with A.N.S.W.E.R. and their affiliates to put tens of thousands of people on site.

So, does this sound like anything any of us should want to see?

If we have to take them, stick them in the coldest most isolated place in the country.

Fair enough... Just remember that private prisons and accountability are not 1:1 - They certainly aren’t here in Texas. A family member that works as a pshrink for Texas prison system has complained non-stop about the steadily rising levels of red-tape and interference she faces since the facility she is at went private. Drives her mad to know people not ready are going free and her time and effort are being eaten up by shoddy CYA maneuvers.

I’ve no proof of it happening in other states but I’d be very surprised if it only happened in Texas. What would we do to prevent that from happening with these men? (The most dangerous criminals around.)

errr.. That was unclear of me. I meant the private authority had her filling out paperwork and filing reports that are a nothing except a CYA for them. Not that she spends her time on CYA for herself.

if they escape, there's always the local posse.I imagine they'd get plenty of volunteers in MT.
