Just a day after President Obama announced he was nominating appellate court judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, the battle over her confirmation has begun with former House speaker Newt Gingrich branding her a racist and saying she should withdraw.
Gingrich today joined the chorus of conservatives such as Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh, who called Sotomayor a "reverse racist."
The accusations are aimed at comments Sotomayor made during a 2001 lecture at the University of California-Berkeley. Referring to former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's saying that "a wise old man and wise old woman will reach the same conclusion in deciding cases," Sotomayor said, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

We can now add legal dunce to the list.
1. GOP roll over for racist judge.
2. Nancy Pelosi-CIA all but forgotten.
And it's only Wednesday.
Oh ya and 3. No more LOST.
Well, Newt should know, ay?
Before she quits, or some such thing, I’d enjoy hearing her say some more idiotic things.
I must say, so far, the lady is the legal equivalent of blaming rain on wet streets.
What a gal!
The media can't marginalize them all.
When Newt is right, he’s right.
Newt is not my first, second, or fifth choice, but so far he is one of the ONLY “politicians” (as opposed to commentators, like Coulter or Limbaugh) who is opposing Obama. For that reason, he is gaining credibility with me.
There’s no such thing as a “reverse-racist”.
You’re either a racist or not.
Why is her experience any more or less valid than a white guys’ experiences?
I mean the most legally-discriminated class of people in this country are white males.
Can’t anyone say the opposite of what she said? It’s not like she knows what it is to live and experience life as a man (being hated by half the population just for being a guy and therefore the source of all the problems in the world) or being white.
You think it’s a bed of roses being a white guy? Gimme a break. We’re the freakin’ scapegoats for everyone who isn’t white and male. We’re the only ones who people are protected discriminating against.
So does our President - at least he's consistant.
FOLKS ANYONE WITH A LEGAL SEARCH SERVICE:
Sotomayer’s opinions are just downright kooky.
They are all out there for ANYONE to find.
http://www.findlaw.com may have them findable.
Does anyone have a list of the new members of the judiciary committee?
TIME FOR THE PHONES TO GET HOT!
I’m sorry. That’s it. I really don’t want to be a whiner or play that favorite game, group identity politics. But all sarcasm, witty rejoinder and cynicism aside, I am outraged that a prospective SC justice would lump me into a group and denigrate my judgement because of the color of my skin and the ethnic backgrounds of my parents. What’s next? White males need not apply?
Get use to it. We have at least 3 years and 8 months left.
Which be, that unless la Sotomayor is on tape committing babyrape and arson while getting shot up on heroin by a Lesbian biker during a hold-up, she is your next SCOTUS member. Deal with it, Whitey.
Kenya boy has the votes. Care to start a betting pool on how many "Republicans," vote for her approval? The Magic Marxist Mulatto is playing race hardball. The Republicans are playing pocket pool.
All our boys are trying to do is position their more or less RINO posteriors for 2010. All they will succeed in doing is lose ...again.
Stand up. Vote against Sotomayor, and shut up and sit down.
Thanks to the internet and a few conservative media outlets, you are aware of these issues. 15-20 years ago, it was a different story.
The world will not come to an end if conservatives stop complaining and start finding solutions. Historically, the answer to every crisis faced by humanity is individual human ingenuity and persistence.
For inspiration, try reading “The Fountainhead”.
No doubt about the votes Soreto has, but public opinion hasn’t weighed in ... If the public thinks she is a stooge, which her writings confirm, then all bets are off.
Maybe she would like to say which races are better ...
