ADMIRAL Mike Mullen has some unusual credentials for the highest ranking military officer in the US.
The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff is the son of a Hollywood spin doctor who was press agent for some big-name movie stars in the 1960s.
Mullen says his father taught him the art of crafting a message, though it didn't seem much help at the US Naval Academy where, in 1968, he graduated 611th out of 836.
As a young lieutenant four years later, Mullen was given command of the gasoline tanker USS Noxubee. He promptly ran it into a buoy, damaging the ship's port propeller, not to mention his career prospects.
To his credit, Mullen knuckled down and made a point of saying the right thing at the right time for the next 35 years.
It paid off in 2007 when Defence Secretary Robert Gates, looking to nominate someone for the post of JCS chairman in the Bush administration, took to asking candidates about their top military concerns.
Mullen cited the strains on US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and won the job. "He didn't start talking about a new aircraft carrier or a submarine," Mr Gates said. "He said 'the army'."

Can you make the ears a little bigger?
Jimmy Carter redux.
Do you have a citation for Califano’s comment? I would like to show it to an Obama supporter.
Check it out if you ever need to attach a gif or anything to a post. They generate the necessary HTML so all you need to do is cut and paste.
“For someone who talks about himself constantly, Obama has a shockingly low level of self-awareness. Hes deluded about himself. He has created this character called Barack Obama, and now he believes it represents the actual person.”
It’s Narcissistic Personality Disorder bordering on Sociopathy.
His weakness is his narcissism.
His old man didn’t come here as an immigrant. His old man came here to get an education, knock up a few white chicks and go back home with the one willing to go back home to Africa and 2nd or 3rd wife. He found one right before he left, but it wasn’t Obama’s mother.
Didn't the media and the libtards complain about how Bush was just like this? And yet, Obama is very much like Bush and the left is all giddy, or at least they were. Some cracks are starting to show about what a con artist this piece of shiite muslim(sic) that now occupies the White House.
Imagine, just IMAGINE the response in the media had a republican president said these same words.
obummer’s old man was a drunk who deserted his whore of a wife. obummer’s mother deserted obummer and left him with his white grandparents.
The problem with such an arrangement is, of course, that the people who get ahead in the organization have no skill other than reading back the positions of the boss and attaching flattering adornments. Not one of them will have independent abilities or thoughts of his own. People who are capable of thinking on their own are incapable of giving the Supremely Confident Boss what he wants.
A more modest boss would keep independent voices around and would be open to hearing contrary opinion, from time to time. Therefore, he will not only tolerate, but promote, capable people in his organization. Therefore, he is in a much better position when things go bad, and fresh thinking is required.
Think what fame does to the average Hollywood "star," and then remember those "Hope" and "Change" stickers, which I called "Obama holy cards."
Imagine what that would do to an unstable person's head.
Question for the Freepers. Has anyone caught Adm Mullin on the talk shows and have you ever questioned what country did he get his uniform from? My first reaction was his white uniform is in the cleaners because he's a sloppy eater. The one he's wearing now is the strangest shade of khaki.
Barry, either that’s not true, or you’re not hiring well. Or it’s true, and you’re hiring even worse than you think. (I think the latter.) Really, at this point, nobody’s ever going to mistake you for Thomas Jefferson dining alone, so stop kidding yourself.
I was disappointed to hear Adm. Mullin side with Obama on closing GITMO. The more I read about him the more it appears he spent his whole military career getting ahead by saying what he thought his superiors wanted to hear. Of course maybe that’s the only way to get ahead in the military and he was just smart enough to realize it.
Carter was no nuclear submariner. He wasn’t even a nuclear engineer. I probably knew just as much as he did about nuclear power when I got out of Nuclear Power School and my parents were married.
He got out of the navy in 1953. He was a flunkie for Rickover at Naval Reactors during the very beginning of naval nuclear power and then quit to become a peanut farmer.
The USS Nautilus was commissioned in 1955.
I get tired of the people that say he was some big yay-hoo in naval nuclear power. He was probably Rickover’s fluff boy.
He was a junior officer and never had a command, especially command of a US man of war.
And therein lies the problem...malignant narcissism.
