Road Trip: Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington D. C.

The Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) is the United States Army's flagship medical center on the east coast of the United States. Located on 113 acres in Washington, D.C., it serves more than 150,000 active and retired personnel from all branches of the military. The center is named after Major Walter Reed (1851-1902), an army physician who led the team which confirmed that yellow fever is transmitted by mosquitoes rather than direct contact.

Since its origins, what is now the WRAMC medical care facility has grown from a bed capacity of 80 patients to approximately 5,500 rooms covering more than 28 acres of floor space. WRAMC will be combining with the Bethesda naval hospital by 2011 to form the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC).

Congressional legislation authorized construction of the Walter Reed General Hospital, and on May 1, 1909, the new facility admitted its first patients. The medical center, named in Major Walter Reed's honor, was founded on principles that would integrate patient care, teaching and research.

In 1923, General John J. Pershing signed the War Department order creating the "Army Medical Center" (AMC) within the same campus as the WRGH. (At this time, the Army Medical School was relocated from 604 Louisiana Avenue and became the "Medical Department Professional Service School" (MDPSS) in the new Building 40.)

In September 1951, "General Order Number 8" combined the WRGH with the AMC; the entire complex of 100 rose-brick Georgian buildings was at that time renamed the "Walter Reed Army Medical Center" (WRAMC).

In June 1955, the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) occupied the new Building 54 and, in November, what had been MDPSS was renamed the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). 1964 saw the birth of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing (WRAIN). Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower died at WRAMC on March 28, 1969.

The Walter Reed Health Care System (WRHCS) is an integrated health care delivery system offering military families, in and around Washington, D.C., access to quality, comprehensive medical care.

WRHCS provides a full range of services for patients, from routine primary care to the most sophisticated, high-tech specialty care. It is patient-focused and dedicated to streamlining each patient’s passage to the appropriate level of care he or she needs. Each facility within the system is a valuable partner and brings its unique expertise to bear on health care delivery.

The system’s staff of 6,000 includes more than 600 Army physicians. Half of them are in training in more than 40 graduate medical specialty programs. Walter Reed trains the majority of the Army’s physician subspecialists. In addition, it conducts training for many nursing and enlisted medical specialties. Its status as a worldwide referral center for patients with the most complex and challenging illnesses supports the high quality of its educational missions, and sustains the capabilities of its clinical staff.

The Walter Reed Health Care System is also the Army’s leading center of clinical research and innovation, attracting annual research support for such efforts as prostate disease research, coronary artery disease reversal, comprehensive breast care, therapy of traumatic brain injury, amputee care and limb salvage, advanced diabetes management, technical advances in robotic surgery, nursing care delivery, evaluation of balance disorders, telemedicine, treatment of chronic viral hepatitis, and many other programs.

Another reason I won't forget....
I had a wonderful conversation with Michelle Malkin,
and she let me have my picture taken with her.
My hair was soaked from the rain! LOL!
(thus the tiny version of the picture! :D)
She loves the troops, too!
