Had enough yet?

Rick Reiss

Friday, May 22nd, 2009.

Big government proponents frequently remind us that taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society. This line is actually attributed to the former Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes.

While true in some respects, our current tax system is anything but civilized. America now has a government riding roughshod over people and businesses with even higher taxes and more rules and regulations. It is only fitting to remember a quotation by another famous American jurist.

“That the power to tax…” wrote US Supreme Court Justice John Marshall “involves the power to destroy.”

Marshall wrote this in the noteworthy 1819 case of McCulloch vs. Maryland. He was on to something here.

McCulloch vs. Maryland was a case whereby Maryland attempted to levy a tax upon the federal Bank of the United States. If the destructive power of taxation was so evident in 1819, how much more is it apparent is it now, 190 years later?

Taxes can indeed destroy.

Income taxes destroy the value of work and with it, the notion that one is entitled to the fruits of his labor. Sales taxes corrode the free market exchange of good and services. Capital gains taxes impede the creation of wealth through investment and savings.

In addition Americans also pay a myriad of other stifling taxes, including:

• Accounts Receivable Tax

• Building Permit Tax

• Cigarette Tax

• Corporate Income Tax

• Dog License Tax

• Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)

• Fishing License Tax

• Food License Tax

• Fuel Permit Tax

• Gasoline Tax

• Hunting License Tax

• Inheritance Tax

• Liquor Tax

• Luxury Taxes

• Marriage License Tax

• Medicare Tax

• Property Tax

• Real Estate Tax

• Service Charge Taxes

• Social Security Tax

• Recreational Vehicle Tax

• School Tax

• State Unemployment Tax (SUTA)

• Telephone Federal Excise Tax

• Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax

• Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge

• Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax

• Telephone Recurring and Non-Recurring Charges Tax

• Telephone State and Local Tax

• Telephone Usage Charge Tax

• Trailer Registration Tax

• Utility Taxes

• Vehicle License Registration Tax

• Vehicle Sales Tax

• Workers Compensation Tax

Had enough yet?

Last month, hundred of thousands of taxpayers protested to say that they too have had enough. Simply put, Americans are growing sick and tired of the scandalous taxing, borrowing and spending by our political class.

It is the elected politicians who have created the trillion dollar deficits, the Byzantine tax codes, the wasteful pork spending, and a national debt that is soaring to infinity and beyond.

These trillion dollar deficits go to the heart of the recent April 15 tea parties and tax protests. These rallies serve as a stern reminder to the political class that:

• You cannot spend your way to wealth.

• You cannot borrow your way out of debt.

• You cannot tax yourself into prosperity.

Big government politicians and their mainstream media sycophants have conveniently dismissed these tea parties as pointless, mean spirited, and even racist.

National mainstream media hosts derided the tea parties, even suggesting that protesters engage in “teabagging,” a crude sexual reference.

While snide liberal media types engage in psychological projection against those with whom they disagree, the Americans who attended these tea party rallies are nothing more than patriots.

Politics are about the future.

The grassroots tea party movement is a growing political force fighting for the future. These Americans demand a future in which their children and grandchildren are not relegated to the status of serfdom due to government corruption and ineptitude.

Yet, the road to serfdom is being paved by our federal and state governments right now. This is a road to nowhere, just like the infamous bridge that was earmarked for Alaska. The political class created this monstrosity. They should be the ones to pay and suffer.

Not the taxpayers.

The tax issue aside, I'm beginning to detect a shift in sentiment by the liberal media towards the anointed one. The honeymoon phase is beginning to wane and reality is setting in ... even the liberals are annoyed with Obama’s blame Bush for everything tact. It diminishes what little leadership ability he has and comes across as whining. At some point he has to claim authorship ...

They will protect and foster him until their dying breaths. Should they let it go that far, he will snuff their lives when he determines they are superfluous to his goals. The Devil ALWAYS betrays his minions.

Ask your neighbor, if he still has the sign. You want to use it. With just a little bit of editing, you’re there: “Had Enough of Obama?”

Civil society (religious or government)was created along with our laws to keep the bullies from controlling everything.

Just like is was in France when the religious "government" had complete control, this new totalitarian secular government is going to pick winners and losers and suppress anyone who gets in their way.

How's that for "change"./s

One liberal’s view of taxes.

“Convoluted as your standpoint is, it’s based on the fallacies that a) money is property, and b) government has no right to it. Money’s value is determined by the country it’s issued in. Think of taxes as a “We’ll let you live here, keep you safe from harm, give you water, and allow you to follow your dreams within the confines of the law” fee. Rich people have more to protect, so they SHOULD be paying more.

Or, you could just think of it as government enforced philanthropy, if you want to feel warm and fuzzy.”
