Failed New York Terror Plot Widens Debate Over Closing Guantanamo (Oh noes!)
FoxNews.com ^ | 5/22/2009

The debate over what to do with the prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention center got more complicated this week when the FBI foiled an alleged terror plot in New York.

The arrest of four men Wednesday on charges that they plotted to bomb two New York City synagogues and shoot down military airplanes served as a reminder that there are terror cells operating in the United States.

It also provided evidence to some lawmakers that closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay or releasing any of its 240 detainees into the U.S. federal prison system would further endanger national security.

"The initial reports that we're getting [are] that these alleged terrorists were converted to radical Islam in jails. I think we need to look at that as a problem as well if jails are going to become a breeding ground for people to convert to any kind radical Islam," Rep. Eliot Engel, (D-N.Y.) told FOX News.

Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) told FOX News that Islamic radicalization is already a problem in prisons.

"And now if you're bringing hundreds of prisoners from Guantanamo who are very ideologically trained, that will add to it," he said. "And I can tell you, going back several years, whether it's California or New York, there's a real concern about these house conversions because they often become the most radical."

To me the most amusing thing is that Obama doesn't seem to want to release any of these chaps either. It all seems to be about the place where they are held: Guantanamo. Enquiring minds should ask why.

He is very keen to place them in US prisons. What, so they can recruit more Jihadis?

When Osama finally gives up and admits that he’s going to keep Gitmo in operation “temporarily,” he’s going to claim victory by stating that he “has accomplished his goal, which was to stimulate a national debate on this vital subject.” He will then declare the subject closed and explain that it’s time to move on. The media will immediately get on board with this and swoon over the brilliance of their hero.

Rep. Engel, democrat where have you been for the last several years?

It has been a known fact Islamist Clerics, Mullahs or whatever you want to call them have been visiting prisons for one purpose, to convert prisoners to Islam.

We just have to "uphold our values" and be nice to the Terrorists and they will all stop..

..Just like that!

Yep, the Dems have demonized GITMO; it has nothing to do with what was done there. The Dems created the mess and now they are stuck trying to figure a way to find a political solution to a problem they created for themselves.

Good point. Even before 9/11, we have heard that prisoner conversions to Islam have been happening.

Obama says that we can put the Gitmo guys in super max prisons, and that nobody has ever escaped from them. But he doesn’t address issues such as prison recruitment if the Gitmo terrorists are in our prisons.

If the terrorists are so outraged about Gitmo being the site of their comrades being imprisoned, are they really going to be happier if their comrades are in an American prison somewhere and not freed to do more Jihad??????

Who the heck ever said that Gitmo gives us a black eye in the eyes of the world in the first place? Has anyone ever heard world leaders or anyone say that they are outraged that America locked up terrorists there???? I wonder if this is a straw man argument.

I am quite sure there are ACLU lawyers lined up waiting to defend these scumbuckets.

Also, the claim is that no one broke out of a Supermax. Okay. What about determined Jihadis trying to “liberate” some of their pals from such a prison. It is on US soil. A bankrolled cell can compromise guards, plan an assualt on the prison, etc.

The media will immediately get on board with this and swoon over the brilliance of their hero.

His adoring media is slipping...

Helen Thomas said Obama "Backs Away From Everything".

The unwatchably butch Rachel Maddow dissed Obama for his "prolonged detention" of, er, "causers of man-caused disasters."

Who's/what's next?

Will Matthews discover that his tingling leg is actually due to terminal sciatica?

Obama has what some might call highly-developed "abandoned child syndrome."

His father left shortly after his birth and his mom sent him to gran and gramps at age 10.

Obama's obsessive need for love and affection has created a huge emotional cavern in his psyche.

IMO, his confidence and hypnotic abilities to "persuade" and "seduce" are the result of and reflective of the deepness of said need.

He has the emotional development of a 10 year old but has the knowledge and power of a Harvard trained attorney.

He is most likely consciously unaware of his psychotic need for adoration...but it drives his personality and actions.

I may be wrong in my diagnosis, but if I am correct...he will snap when his collision with reality settles in.

I hope his advisors are watching him carefully, because he will reach his breaking point shortly.

"these house conversions ... often become the most radical."

So now we know the real reason behind the desire to transfer the Gitmo Jihadi's to US prisons: The further radicalization of US criminals.

One quick shout-out to those of you who think that Ø's apparent flip-flopping on the Gitmo issue is a sign of weakness or indecision; he's just letting the Dialectic do it's job for him. It's what he does best. He knows that in the end, the flow goes his way.

” But Frank Cilluffo, director of the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University, told FOXNews.com that any risk of bringing detainees into the federal prison system can be contained.

“If they had access to the general population, there’s huge concern for radicalization,” he said.
“If they’re isolated,
I think that concern exists, but I think it can also be handled and addressed.”

Keeping terrorists at Gitmo where the trade winds waft and they can congregate at picnic tables,
chatting and reading their Korans and later they can play soccer...is cruel and inhumane.
Barry brings them to Marion or Florence,
locks them in an underground concrete isolation cube where they get one hour outdoors
( winter in Illinois and Colorado is 180 degress from the Carribean )
and he calls that an improvement on Gitmo ??
The ACLU will be on this like rats on a cracker.
Eventually, it will wind up at Obama’s USSC-where the liberal nuts will prevail and BO gets his way-
freedom for Muslim terrorists- without politically dirty hands.

There is also the issue of the safety of the guards and their families, and the surrounding community.

You think al Queda would find it impossible to find out where guards live? And once they know where guards live, they can threaten their families unless they cooperate. Now visualize terrorists taking over a local school and holding it hostage for the release of their friends.

In practical terms, closing Guantanamo down makes little sense. But then, not much that Obama does makes sense in practical terms.
