That's the argument raging online.
"It's difficult not to wonder if Lambert's sexuality played a role in Allen's victory," the Chicago Tribune's TV critic writes. "Though he never said whether he was gay, pictures of Lambert kissing other men appeared on the Internet during Season 8.
"If Lambert's popularity on Idol was any indication of how tolerant and accepting America has become, his loss may indicate there's still further to go," continues the Tribune writer.
Adds pro poker player (and recent Celebrity Apprentice runner-up) Annie Duke: "I seriously think Adam lost just because he is gay. Bummed. Bummed. Bummed."
Blog Examiner.com labels Lambert as "polarizing," stating: "Adam was too gay for America."
Lambert once again dodged questions on how his sexuality may have played into the results.
When asked his thoughts about blogs saying, 'If he wins [it's] because he's gay, or if he loses [it's] because he's gay,' Lambert told reporters jokingly: "Is that what they're gonna say? Those blogs have a lot of opinions, don't they? I think that Kris won because he's a great artist and I was happy to be a runner-up to that.
"If there's anything that can come from this experience, and I hope that all the fans out there can pick up on, is that even if you're really different, there's a way to get along with each other," Lambert continued. "And it's not about 'Oh, you beat me because of this,' or 'You, you're different.' It's about finding the common stuff that makes it work."
Ryan Seacrest pointed out on May 13's episode that, of the 88 million votes cast that week, only 1 million separated Allen and Lambert. In an Usmagazine.com poll of 84,000 readers Tuesday, the contestants were virtually tied.

American Idol is still on Television?
The majority of Americanos simply fail to understand what exactly it is that homosexuals do to achieve their filthy orgasms.
You are completely wrong. Not only is Idol a singing contest, Idol is an exercise in achieving the American Dream.
The left...champions of diversity. But don’t be so diverse as to disagree with them.
That was a fgood waste of a half hour back then. Where’s all the quality TV like that nowadays?
If that is true how did Adam get to the final 2 ???
According to you nobody voted for the gay guy.
Adam was the more talented finalist. However, trying to look like a butched up version of Liza Minella has gotta cost ya.
Did his handlers even consider the voting audience (i.e., a very large percentage of female teeny boppers)?
Credit to Adam for being gracious and not stupid about it in his loss.
So it seems apparent that America spoke and they don’t like touchers. They need to get over it.
Adam was a screamer not a singer.
I’m actually kinda jealous...he puts on his makeup something like a million times better than I do...*sigh*
Folks, this contest is called “AMERICAN IDOL.”
How idols of young boys wear dresses and black nail polish?
How many of the young girls who dream of dating their singing idol, have visions of growing up and dating a gay man?
How popular would Obama be if it was revealed that HE wore dresses and black nail polish?
I’m not into that sort of rock music, but my biggest complaint was the singing with the tongue out.
I’d rather burn my ears out with a soldering iron than EVER listen to that American Idol pop music crap. They put a Kelly Clarkson song on in a store I was in last week and I ran screaming out the door. Please God is there anything that can save us from that MariahCarey-esque pop caterwauling? I don’t care if those banshees are gay or straight or animal lovers. I just wish they would go away. (Putting on John Lee Hooker)
And how many voted for this guy because he was homosexual
Adam has one of those other-worldly voices with an impossible range like Roy Orbison or Freddie Mercury. If you can close your eyes and ignore the flamboyant weirdness and listen to the voice alone, his vocal qualities are superior to those of Kris Allen, who is nonetheless quite talented. But Adam's stage persona is defined by a sexually ambiguous look and a theatrical nature that likely turned off some of his potential audience.
Sorry, I meant SCREAMING with the tongue out.
Considering that homosexuals permeate all of the entertainment industry and they are in fact highly successful in their careers, I can’t imagine that Adam Lambert’s sexual preferences had anything to do with the vote. That’s just a lame excuse for losing (and he apparently lost by the largest amount ever for the show).
Could it be that maybe the straight guy was more talented than the breechloader?
