An Open Letter to New York Republicans:
As I read the news about the recent advances of marriage equality across our country, I think it is easy for many to get distracted by the politics and rhetoric on this issue and lose sight of what is really at its heart: the equality of freedom.
No matter how politically charged the discussions about marriage equality may get, the question is really a simple one: Do the rights and privileges we offer citizens include everyone in our country, or only some of us?
I believe that allowing gays and lesbians the freedom to marry is an idea whose time has come. Though my opinion is no doubt influenced by my family's public role in political life, I still approach this from personal experience, as I think most people do. For me, this is about treating all of my friends, and all of our brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren the same as I want to be treated. Equality under the law and personal freedoms are what make America the greatest country in the world, and they are core values that I hold as a Republican.

Just brilliant, Meghan. That’ll bring the Republican party roaring back to power in the WH and Congress. All we need to do is pander to gays in NY, that state whose electoral votes Republicans can always count on. Why didn’t we all think of that?
We'd be taking the initiative to bring equality AND everyone would see that many gay activists don't want equal protection/rights, they want that word - marriage.
But, once Civil Union laws are on the books and done, it would be a lot harder to push for the word they want when they already have everything else.
Then we could be done with this issue except for a few radicals.

I’m ready for a Meghan McCain-free zone, myself. Sheesh But I’m glad you posted her latest ruminations. Maybe we can hand her over to the Dems like the way they formally exchange prisoners in other countries. LOL
This problem isn’t that difficult. In most faiths, marriage is a sacrament, making it a function of religion.
The fact that gov’t took that notion and codified it into law, conferring financial benefits, is of no moment here.
To me (and go ahead and flame away if you disagree, I’m a grownup), I’m NO FAN of gay marriage. Because I believe that infringes on the rights of churches to set their own rules.
Now, if one is talking about the act of setting up an ECONOMIC UNIT, for treatment of taxes, Social Security, healthcare, inheritance and all the rest, that is something different. Call it an economic or civil union or whatever you want.
The topic that should be on the table is not gay marriage (since that is the province of religion) but the gov’t treatment of individual households, fraught with moral hazard as they may be.
But to me, that is the proper question. Not the red herring of gay marriage, which is designed merely to inflame.

Because the leftist media has declared her the leader of the Republican party. Without a slap-down from the GOP, it could be seen as tacit approval for her leftist views as to how the GOP should change.
So as insufferable a twit as Meghan McCain is, until she’s demonstrably hounded away from the GOP, she’s one more threat in the media’s arsenal fighting against a conservative rebirth in the party.

It is not about freedom. It is not about equality. It is not about fairness. It is about pretending that homosexuality is normal.

Simply consider the source. Poor Meghan doesn’t speak with too much wisdom....or logic.
Meggers sort of typifies the problem right now. The GOP is interested in courting popularity, not in demonstrating leadership. Popularity demands one capitulate to the particular wind blowing at a given moment in time. Leadership is founded on principles that dictate the right course, no matter how howling the wind may be.
It’s how America - and the GOP - have triumphed in the past and why they are floundering now.
That's just calling something by a different name. It's like when the Democrats call welfare an "investment", as if that's supposed to make us feel better. The whole civil unions idea was created by the left to sneak recognition and benefits for same-sex couples into law without the difficulty created by calling it what it is. Liberalism is full of these little deceits. You can get more people to support abortion if it call it pro-choice rather than pro-abortion. Same policy, different name.

Why should conservatives, the people who protect our culture, be taking the initiative to bring "equality" to same-sex couples? Should we have polygamy civil unions, too? Are those okay as long as we don't call them marriage?

Not at all. The left would say that we've already conceded that homosexual couples deserve equality and deserve all the benefits of normal couples, so why are we withholding the name "marriage" from them?

The history of liberalism is filled with examples of this working exactly opposite from your prediction. We were told that if we increase the number of Third Worlders who legally can immigrate here, there'll less need for them to sneak in and even if they do, only the radicals would suggest allowing them to stay. We were told that if we pass the Civil Rights Act, only the radicals would say that blacks should be given race preferences and quotas.
In fact, when "gay rights" laws first appeared on the horizon thirty years ago, we were told that if we give them equality in employment and housing, they'll be satisfied and only the radicals will demand personal relationship equality.
When, in the entire history of liberalism, have liberals ever been satisfied with something? The only way to stop the homosexual juggernaut is to come right out and say that homosexuality is unnatural and cannot be respected by our laws without doing great harm to our liberties and our culture, and without exposing children to harmful propaganda and recruitment. Meeting them halfway, or in the case of civil unions 98% of the way, won't work.
You’re absolutely right. After all, everyone in this country of legal age, already has the right to marry anyone they want as long as they are of the opposite sex. That sounds equal to me.
