Bob Schieffers first instinct was to act like a T-ball coach and give everyone a medal. But the avuncular Face The Nation host ultimately scored Dick Cheney the winner over PBO in yesterdays dueling national security speeches.
Schieffer made his admission on this mornings Early Show.
HARRY SMITH: This was a debate in every possible way, except it was not face-to-face. Is it possible to say which case was more compelling?

Yes, the one who is not lying, evading and blaming others for the results of what they are doing
Cheney’s speech was pre-planned. This was Obama’s show all the way. He ran to the National Archives to wave the bloody shirt and got his arse kicked by Cheney. Even the MSM is having a hard time rescuing Obama from himself.
Even Schieffer says Cheney won ping to Today show list.
NOTE TO TODAY SHOW PING LIST MEMBERS: I hit the wrong button and deleted the list from Google Docs yesterday. I’ve manage to recreate it from older versions, but that probably means that some new members are missing and a couple who requested to be deleted are back on it. Please alert me to any errors.
And of course, new ping list members are always welcome. Don’t be misled by the name, which for historical reasons is called “the Today show ping list.” The list actually pings my blog items at FinkelBlog and occasionally NewsBusters, focusing mainly on criticism of the liberal media but also occasionally offering pure political commentary from a conservative perspective.
Cheney = the Truth
Cheney was factual about protecting America, Obama hopeful. Folks may buy the Kenyan’s hope-hype when it comes to domestic issues but not national security.
Obama should try very hard in the future to prevent anybody from contrasting him against Dick Cheney, side by side. Obama suffers greatly from the comparison.
CHENEY: I defended America
OBAMA: My Dog at my homework...
“CHENEY: I defended America
OBAMA: My Dog at my homework...”
or....
CHENEY: I defended America
OBAMA: That’s above my pay grade.
Boy, he sure did twist and cringe in getting those words out, didn’t he? It was kind of like watching someone slowly stick a knife into their own gut and twist the handle.
Anytime someone points to "the last election" being the American peoples rejection of Cheney/Bush, I just wonder what the sam hill they are talking about. It was rejection of McCain and his NOT being different than "0".
It really is a shame that VP Cheney didn’t want to run for President in 2008. He would have wiped 0bama with truth and great speeches.
Schieffer must be having a conniption having to admit that Dick Cheney was better than 0bama. Anybody listening would know it easily but having Schieffer admit it is priceless.
The truth hurts the MSM, but let’s give Schieffer for ultimately putting it out there.
Congress is treating Obama the way Obama has been treating Chrysler and GM. Congress is forcing Obama to come up with an acceptable plan before they dole out the next payment. How does it feel to have the shoe on the other foot, Obama?
This is like what a parent does with a recalcitrant child, breaking down jobs to the smallest unit in order to get the child to perform. It is frightening, indeed, to consider the fact that Congress is acting more maturely than the Executive Branch in this matter. This fact speaks volumes about the executive.
You know it’s gone bad for Zero when even his propagandists can’t support him with a straight face.
CHENEY: “I defended America ...”
OBAMA: “Me, me, me ... I, I, I ...
CC alert.......
The spectacle of two duelling speeches with a mile of each other in downtown Washington was extraordinary. I was at the Cheney event and watched Obama’s address on a big screen beside the empty lectern that the former veep stepped behind barely two minutes after his adversary had finished.
So who won the fight? (it’s hard to use anothing other than a martial or pugilistic metaphor). Well, most people are on either one side or the other of this issue and I doubt today will have prompted many to switch sides.
But the very fact that Obama chose to schedule his speech (Cheney’s was announced first) at exactly the same time as the former veep was a sign of some weakness.
Pay attention to his breathing when he speaks. It is labored at best.
The O, followed by Cheney.Yep, Team Obama screwed the pooch by their poor planning.
Cheney's speech was scathing.
Even worse, Cheney's speech was followed by 3 hours of Rush.
