Der Spiegel - other nations helped Germany in Holocaust

20th May 2009

Poland, among other countries helped Hitler mastermind the mass murders, the German weekly says

The Der Spiegel weekly claims that Germany would not have been able to prosecute its WWII mass-murder campaign against the Jews on its own and the country required the cooperation of other nations, including Poland.

The magazine's front-page story, entitled "Partners. European associates in murdering Jews," cites the case of John Demjaniuk, a former Ukrainian SS-officer, who is currently awaiting trial in Munich, in its bid to prove that without the support of citizens from occupied states the extermination of European Jews would not have been possible.

"Obviously, only Hitler and his associates or the Wehrmacht, were able to stop the Holocaust. This, however, does not weaken the argument that without foreign allies, thousands if not millions of the six million Jews killed would have been saved," the Der Spiegel article reads.

In addition, the weekly claims that while the French, Dutch and Belgians could not have really known what was happening to the Jews, Poles were well aware of the fate that awaited them in concentration camps. Historians and experts from Poland and Germany have undermined the weekly's claims, saying it has made a number of misinterpretations.

Yes, of course. Like the Germans are really in a position to lecture the Poles about complicity with the Nazis...

BWAHAHAHAHA

I remember the scene in “Saving Private Ryan” where some German SS guys were pretending to be Polish, and of course the US soldiers shouted at them, “there are no Poles in the SS”.

It will probably end with accusing Poles of taking German lebensraum. I I were a Pole living around Cracow, I would move before it is too late.

Of course the Poles started the war when they took over that radio station in Gleiwitz. /s

Not true...Poland was as antisemetic as Germany, no difference there on that concept between the Germans and Poles.

Oh, c’mon - don’t hesitate. I’d say they were even worse than the Germans.

lizol, here's how I would translate Der Spiegel's cover story title:
Die Komplizen: Hitlers europäische Helfer beim Judenmord

"The Accomplices: Hitler's European Helpers in the Murder of Jews"

Deflecting blame onto others doesn't expunge the gutwrenching, soul-destroying guilt.

Yep, they ingest anti-semitism with their breast milk.

It wasn’t my translation. I just quoted the article.

My knowledge of German language is limited to “Das is eine Lampe” and “Mein Klassenzimmer is gross un hell” :-)))

Every half century or so the Germans just get nutty.

That is why they don't have nuclear weapons. With dependable German efficiency they could conquer the world in a week.

So what. I think you've missed out on a chunk of history. Poland was conquered by Russia and Germany and disposed of like so much tissue paper.

The Germans then proceeded to kill all the Jews. They killed nearly as many non-Jews in Poland as well.

The Poles did not form the Nazi party nor did they propose exterminating the Jews.

End of story.

I am not calling all Polish people Nazi’s. Nor am I saying they were unusually anti semetic, more so than “other ‘ countries. There are of course, many, many examples of decent people who were NOT antisemetic during that time in Poland.

I meant to say that antisemitism was ( and still is) rampant ALL over the world...that includes Germany, Poland, France, Russia and yes, the US. Neither are Germans the only people that could have come with a holocaust.

Create the same circumstances here in America, with the same Hitler type and it would not be that far fetched. Having said that, the US is probably the one nation in the world that is least ‘nationalistic” in a negative, vicious, intolerant way.

Just look at how the world will let the Jews be exterminated in Israel...that speaks volumes to the global anti-semitism.

You do realize that Poland is Israel's strongest ally in Europe today?

I get Der Spiegel's English language news email.

Today's started out: "The Germans are responsible for the industrial-scale mass murder of 6 million Jews. But the collusion of other European countries in the Holocaust has received surprisingly little attention until recently."

When I saw it I had to ask, "What frigging planet are you frigging Germans living on? Like you never saw Shoah or The Sorrow and the Pity?

Sometimes it looks like the German role in the Holocaust actually gets downplayed in the media.

But Der Spiegel is like Time or Newsweek. It's not really a "news magazine." It's propaganda, a way of spreading attitudes and making them fashionable.

Finland wasn't a "co-belligerant", the Russians had attempted to take over Finland. The war was more or less a stalemate, but the Russian army was definitely defeated. To stop the war the Fins gave up much of Eastern Finland. As part of the deal the Finns were then required to kick the Germans out of the country ~ something like 250,000 troops.

They did that smartly.

The rest of WWII continued on for 5 years or thereabouts.

The lesson for everyone ~ the Finland had an army that could beat both the Russians and the Germans. The rest of the world took 5 more years just to beat the Germans.

Irrespect of how folks want to make the war between Russia and Finland look, they must also consider the war between Germany and Finland.

Finland was no one's co-belligerant. On the other hand, in the German war against Poland and the Russian war against Poland, Germany and Russia were co-belligerants.

And this joke has been around for years on how Austria has been trying to convince the world that Beethoven was Austrian, and that Hitler was German.

Wish it were the same here in the states.

I am saying that NO people have a corner on the market on not becomming monstors....while it is not fair to isolate one country in the complicity of the Nazi regime...it avoids the larger question, “Could it ever happen with OUR people?”

To point to ONE country or people as evil takes us away from focusing on the political and economic theologies that spawn such hate. and anti semitism is one such ideology.
