A new report from the National Center for Health Statistics with the dry title, "Changing Patterns of Nonmarital Childbearing in the United States," contains startling news: births to single mothers, which had leveled off in the early 2000s, have risen sharply in recent years. In 2007, nearly 40 percent of all babies born in the United States were born to single women, up from 34 percent in 2002. Some sociologists believe we have reached a tipping point: the link between marriage and parenthood is no longer the norm. Why is this happening, and what does it mean for women, children, and men? There are no simple answers - only difficult questions that we ignore at our peril.

At least they are not aborting them.
Who’s fault is it? Did “daddy” leave on his own to impregnate other women or did “mommy” just say thanks and kick “daddy” out?
There are simple answers, not easy ones. This situation is a result of easy “solutions”.
Another effect that gives cause for alarm is that a man who grows accustomed to the use of contraceptive methods may forget the reverence due to a woman, and, disregarding her physical and emotional equilibrium, reduce her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires, no longer considering her as his partner whom he should surround with care and affection.
No...they are “aborting” a parent....which is CHILD ABUSE, too.
Government stepped in and said “the taxpayer will be your husband and you won’t have to put up with a man in ‘your’ house that we’ll pay for”.
These women arent single. They’re married to Uncle Sugar.
And the X Generation doesn’t want to get married. The only ones WANTING desperately to go to the Court House for the document are gays and lesbians. Go figure!
Government weenies love this as they get to replace the fathers.
Communism, here we come!
A culture that approves of single motherhood and the absence of fathers is also a culture more likely to embrace abortion on demand.
60% is still the norm. The left just hopes that big government will be daddy to the majority....more control and power.
I blame it on this whole women are allowed to talk back thing.
It is our fault because we let it happen. We did not chastise the rogue elements of our society when we had the chance, much like a bad parent who allows his/her offspring to terrorize the neighborhood when they child was small because they lacked the will, and then lacking the physical power to control them once they grew into adolescents.
We are now in the thrall of the adolescents, AKA liberals.
The downward death-spiral of our society continues, and the only force able to stop it will come from the barrels of a million guns in the hands of concerned citizens who are finally fed up. I do not look to the government for salvation; they are rapidly becoming irrelevant as the battle lines become clearer by the day.
I blame it on the "women allowed to vote" thing.
one of my former employees had three children by three different fathers. all three are in jail. from what i hear, she is now living in some women’s shelter. God help the future of our country!
Ya women's suffrage, overrated.
I'm a late Gen Xer (1980), and I've finally met the best woman in my life and plan to marry. Gen X went from 1961 - 1981, so I'm sure there are plenty of others who are married.
Gen Y (1981-1993) fits into the definitions thrown out there. My brother and I are 3 years apart, and he's still living at home addicted to painkillers. Not sure what happened in that small period, but it screwed up our country something terrible.
