Frankly, I think capital punishment is in order for any crime in which the victim would have been justified using deadly force to resist. In such cases, the criminal has himself, subordinated the value of his life to the fruits of the crime.

My only reluctance with the death penalty has nothing to do with misgivings about its suitability, but rather with prosecutors like Nifong or Spitzer who, IMHO, would have no problem seeking it solely for political ends.

I’ve always felt that the surviving relatives should be able to decide the punishment for murder up to and including the way he killed the victim. If the culprit stabbed the victim to death, then the relatives should have the option of doing the same to the murderer. Certainly no painless lethal injection!
