Albertsons is set to announce widespread price cuts
Los Angeles Times ^ | 5/19/09 | Jerry Hirsch

Albertsons will announce a plan Wednesday to lower prices for thousands of goods at its 222 Southern California supermarkets. The initiative is aimed at regaining budget-minded customers lost to discounters such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp.

It also comes at a time when Southern California supermarkets, including grocery giants Ralphs and Vons, are moving to compete more fiercely on prices.

The chains "are trying to get people back in the stores," said Simeon Gutman, a New York-based analyst at Canaccord Adams, a financial firm with headquarters in Vancouver.

It is about time! The groceries at Albertsons are very overpriced. The grocery store nearest my house is an Albertsons. I shopped there until the strike in 2003/2004. During the strike I started shopping at Food4Less, which is a Kroger owned chain, but their employees were on a different union contract, so were not part of the strike/lock-out. I discovered that Food4Less had much better prices, so I continued shopping there, even after the strike had ended. I now only occassionally go into Albertsons.

As the years have gone by, the price differences between the two stores have increased. Name brand canned vegetable cost twice as much at Albertsons as at Food4Less. Albertsons store brand items can cost up to three times as much as similar Kroger store brand items at Food4Less. If Albertsons wants to keep any customers at all, they really need to reduce their prices to be more competitive.

I still shop at the Food4less on Sunset because their prices are hard to beat. Albertsons I agree, is way overpriced. I call it Pavilions Lite. But not all stores in L.A. are the same. Milk at F4L and Ralphs are the cheapest but Vons is way expensive. Vons on the other hand, has cheaper veggies & fruits compared to Ralphs. One just has to be observant.

Albertson’s prices are TERRIBLE even here in their home City State of Boise, ID. Literally twice as expensive as Walmart on many identical products. It’s about damned time they looked at their prices.

Alberson’s couldn’t compete against HEB in my city. They had inferior produce and a lousy bakery.

Jim Rogers: Food Prices Will Skyrocket

Wednesday, May 13, 2009 12:21 PM
By: Dan Weil

Renowned investor Jim Rogers says that the rally in stocks and the dollar will soon end, thanks to the Federal Reserve’s massive easing policy.

“I’m not buying shares anywhere,” he tells Bloomberg TV.

“I’m not selling short yet. But…if it keeps going like this, I’ll have to start selling short eventually. I don’t see the stock market as a great place to be in the next two to three years, maybe even the next decade.”

[snip]

We’re going to have serious food shortages. … Prices are going to go through the roof.”

Good. They can start by not charging $4.50 for a gallon of 2%. I’ve just about stopped going there unless it’s an emergency (being the closest to my house).

Jeez, I happened to be in Walmart yesterday and bought 2 gallons of milk for $3.96!

Albertsons is out of business here in FL. Publix bought them out and assumed some of their locations. Their stores were mostly dirty and crappy. Not as bad as Winn Dixie though.

They should have used that approach instead of adopting that stupid “loyalty card” tactic!

That was the end of 30 years of preferring Albertson’s.

Now, the 2 stores closest to me have closed and the price cuts don’t matter.

Who in the hell wants to carry around a “loyalty card” for every fricken store you might want to walk into?

I agree with you. I don't know why anyone shops at Albertson's. Their prices are substantially higher. I've always wondered what the management was thinking and who shops at their stores.

Produce is what's killing me. It's become a boutique item here in my little California town NW of LA, where competition is severely -- and deliberately -- limited.

There's no such thing as buying bulk: everything comes bagged, tagged and pre-priced beyond imagination! The local Vons routinely asks $4.95/lb. for rhubarb! I can buy a bunch of red beets (2-3 beets) for $4 and they chop the green tops off -- my favorite part. Green beans are routinely near $3/lb.-- they must be making a fortune off them! Pole beans are one of the most productive plants in existence! All other produce prices are beyond outrageous.

I've grown my own gardens for many years and know what these items really cost to raise. I'm seriously considering bringing in decent topsoil and converting my entire back yard into a high-yield raised-bed vegetable garden. To hell with corporate farming and monopolistic marketing!

I worked for Albertson’s here in Northern Ca until they folded. Supervalue owns them now.

Middle and upper management at Albertsons was the most petty mean spirited a groupe of bastards ever assembled.

They were run out of NorCal twice...good riddence.

I hope Aldi from Germany continues to expand in Florida. They also operate Trader Joe’s low cost gourmet food store.

Aldi is owned the the German Albrecht brothers who are two of the wealthiest men in Europe. They are in their 70s and are Catholic. They essentially chased Wal Mart out of Germany because their prices and service are almost unbeatable. They will be a major headache for Publix.

Even Stater Brothers is getting expensive. I wonder if Albertsons will remain upscale.

“...I've always wondered what the management was thinking and who shops at their stores.”

They have me over the barrel occasionally. Albertson’s is the only grocery store within 5 miles of me so I have to go there for my last minute forgetfuls. Otherwise, I drive the extra mile and shop on my way home at other stores to avoid it.

COmpetition is great, but I love my Publix. It is a block from my home (1/2 a block from the beach) and if I shop smart (BOGO’s, etc.) they are as price competitive as anyone.

I realize there are bad Publix, but if I were to move, the first thing I would look at is “where’s the Publix, and how good is it”.

Publix is well into Georgia and South Carolina now. They must be doing something right.
