Obama unveils 'historic' car efficiency standards

by Stephen Collinson Tue May 19, 5:06 pm ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama Tuesday unveiled "historic" efficiency and greenhouse gas standards for US cars, forging a rare moment of unity between auto firms and environmentalists on climate change.

"For the first time in history, we have set in motion a national policy aimed at both increasing gas mileage and decreasing green house gas pollution for all new trucks and cars sold in the United States," Obama said.

The president gathered 10 auto industry chiefs, from crippled US firms to foreign giants, plus union bosses and environmentalists, to celebrate the deal forged by his administration in secret talks over the past few weeks.

Automakers will be forced to dramatically boost the efficiency of cars and light trucks by 2016, in a move that will save 1.8 billion barrels of oil and achieve cuts of 900 million metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

These guys are amazing. While so many things are falling apart, they tend to fixate on little liberal agenda of one kind or another.

I would wager that Obama will create a liberal dreamland before the whole country collapse on him. Fitting end to ludicrous day-dreamers called limousine liberals.

Historic = massive overreach, unconstitutional.

The left today celebrates the destruction of our Nations of laws not men.

They might be historic, but unrealistic.2016 isn’t far away.

When Bill O’Reilly praised this initiative, Laura Ingraham told him he would never fit in a clown car.

This is a great idea. /sar

The auto industry is collapsing because no one will buy new cars, so they force new standards which will significantly increase auto costs.

To top it off, Asian manufacturers probably make better fuel-efficient cars than Big Three. He may have to close U.S. auto market for U.S. cars.

a rare moment of unity between auto firms and environmentalists

Gimme a break. According some news report or another, this "unity" is the US car manufacturers agreeing to something that (they hope) will provide stability for a few years during which they can respond, as opposed to an ever-changing landscape tilted against them.

Unlike some FReepers I like small, agile (and economic) cars -- the first two elements have kept me out of accidents larger cars simply could not have avoided, and in one or two cases they did not (I drove away, they did not). I will continue to purchase same until my driving reflexes dictate otherwise.

But I think we all need the freedom to purchase our choice of cars, whatever it might be.

Cheaper oil could be achieved if more oil was brought to market like opening up ANWR.

Eventually, enough people are going to figure out that a law is only as good as it’s capacity to be enforced.

This leads to a lawless society, because even the good laws can no longer be enforced, making everything about our constitution and law moot and martial law inevitable.

I believe this is what the man behind the curtain REALLY wants.

There won't be a US company breaking the law because they will be no US auto manufacturers. Obama is incompetent and a loser.

Does the Congress get to vote on these new Cafe standards or the President just gets to make them up as he goes.

Did anyone else catch the totally uncritical and, dare I say, friendly tone of this article? The text of this article might have come directly from Obama's press secretary. This isn't news, it's cheerleading.

Another thing that's curious is why the Detroit 3 are so happy about these new standards. Their most profitable cars are the ones with the worst mileage. SUVs and pickups and so forth. I guess people will say anything with a gun to their heads.

Historic is the equivalent of “broad” and “sweeping” the two main media weaselwords of the Clinton era, and they weren’t taling about females.

You got it...unconstitutional....By the executive branch moving forward the date of enforcement of an act by congress he is re-legislating a law. Thats not his job
But nobodys catching this...Just like ACORN’s use of federal funds intimidating citizens by threats or vandalism of private property to implement a government policy initiated by the executive branch...
