Crushed by debt, Cleveland Urban League will close Tuesday, May 19, 2009 4:57 PM
CLEVELAND -- The Urban League of Greater Cleveland says it has lingering debt and will close after 92 years of serving the city's inner-city residents and businesses.
It is suspending services Friday and closing on May 29. The agency's 15 full-time employees are losing their jobs.
Chief Executive Officer Johnathan Holifield says the affiliate of the National Urban League has $2.75 million in debt, mostly on the purchase of its headquarters in 2002. He says that makes the nonprofit organization unable to run its programs to develop literacy, job skills and economic opportunities.
Holifield says he doesn't know of any other city where the Urban League is in a similar situation.

Never been a better time in this country for liberal organisations to declare bankruptcy. Come and get it!

Never buy what you can't afford. Like banks, Detroit auto makers and ACORN?

Urban League is not thought of as a “Liberal Organization”.

I wonder what the goals of the League were 100 years ago, and what they are now. I'll bet they are quite different.

I don’t even know what they do here in Cleveland. Lots of wasted money is my guess on this deal.

Just how does a nonprofit get to be 2 million in debt?
