Downtown Manhattan, the city's party mecca, has been hit by an alarming spike in vicious street violence.

Assaults in Greenwich Village lead the frightening upturn, with a whopping 43 percent increase so far this year compared with the same period in 2008.

"I've never seen it like this before -- never, ever," said G. Simon Chafik, a female photographer who has lived in Manhattan for 15 years.

"I'm a big New Yorker. New York is one of the safest cities. [But] I'm beginning to question that."

Other hot Manhattan neighborhoods tainted by the crime wave include TriBeCa, with a nearly 17 percent jump, and Gramercy, which has seen a 24 percent increase in assaults.

When you outlaw guns, only outlaws have guns.

New Yorkers deserve what they get.

Gee, what's the difference between things in NYC now, and say, roughly a decade ago... Oh yes... Rudy cleaned things up, and Bloomberg has dismantled much of what Rudy did... Though he did get rid of smoking...

All those obama voters flexing their muscles; it’s payback time for them.

Displaying the naivete of a post-Dinkins resident.

All those liberals support government using force against individuals. But don’t like it when people show a little gumption and initiative a go out and rob and rough up the citizenry on their own.

Reminds me of a photo collage I received recently containing mug shot pictures of 20 people, male and female, each one wearing a t-shirt with some type of Obama picture or text about Obama that you can see in the mug shot! LOL!

That's the problem...too many new-comers have no experience with NYC of the seventies and early eighties. They ain't seen nothing yet.

I wager these sprees are the work of a handful of recently-released bad guys. That's usually what we've seen here in the past, with this pattern. The cops will try to nab them using decoys, their faces will grace page one of the tabloids, and back to Attica they'll go.

Yo. N00bs in Noo Yawk: Stick to well-lit main streets, stay alert, and if you're a lady, dress like one, and you can make yourself safer.

This guy is kidding himself. The only time NY was even remotely safer was under Rudy and then not as much as he would like people to believe. The old USSR claimed their crime rate was way down also all during their rule but in reality it was terrible.

NYC has always been one of the leading crime areas in the US. I guess all those gun laws aren't working somehow. How can that be?

I’ll bet that $12/pack cigarettes don’t add to the crime mix /s.

It’s really getting bad. The other day I heard about a lady who was mugged for a loaf of marble rye.

Yeah; I think her name was Mrs. Choate. Heard about that, too. Very sad.
