According to reports in The New York Times and elsewhere, President Barack Obama will resolve conflicts between state and Federal fuel economy standards by announcing that California's stricter limits will be applied nationwide.
By the 2016 model year, new rules will require each carmaker's Corporate Average Fleet Economy (CAFE) to reach 42 miles per gallon, weighted by sales. That is the level effectively required by California's limits on greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide.

GM had better ramp up production of the Chevy Volt and take advantage of economies of scale, so they can cut the price.
CORRECTION: 42 MPG CAFE.
He can mandate it all he wants. It ain’t going to happen. Maybe he should lower the gravitation pull of the earth. That way we could save a lot of mileage on hills.
I’d like to see an affordable car with an automatic transmission (hell, even a manual one) which has 4WD and can get through 2 feet of snow on the roadway without the driver putting a deathgrip on the steering wheel. While you’re at it, is there a 40+ mpg car that DOESN’T change direction by sticking your hand out the window?
Buy balsa wood futures.
All those poor union workers!
Man, I’ve wanted an MG-42 for the longest time and
now obama mandates us all to have one. Whoa!
Dreams do come true! Thank you almighty one!
Last I heard the .gov had killed the Volt project, as well as the equinox fuel cell. Dunno if it's true or not.
Sidenote my GEO Metro still buries those standards, though it has no weight taking up safety features so if I'm in a crash I should die a horrible fiery death.
So how am I doing?
And, so an American family can fit into a 42 mpg vehicle, Obama has also mandated the one-child policy.
We’ll all be driving smart cars.
I rented a Metro in Houston once (a city with notoriously insane drivers in pick up trucks). I was sure I would never make it home alive!
Wait until we’re all driving one of three models of that piece of excrement, and we see old movies with our great old cars in them.
Look I actually like the smart car for smaller city trips to the grocery store and such, so I’m not opposed to them being out there.
It’s just that this bumbling fool is going to destroy our auto industry, to fix something that isn’t broken.
What you do is make a mad drive “Manattan project” level if you think you must, to devise better cars than we have now. You don’t go backwards.
This guy has figured out the worst possible way of moving into the future, with a program mired in negativism.
Turbo-Diesel sedans and wagons (by VW in the US - by just about everybody in Europe).
Kill the automakers? How about all us poor schlubs who are going to be driving sardine cans across the highways of America?
Along with your stockpile of incadescent light bulbs.
This BMW diesel gets 54 mpg.
Lotsa diesel automobiles get better than 42 mpg on the highway; don't know how they do in city driving, though.
Everyone will be in sardine cans, so no problem. hehehe
