Guantanamo Military Tribunals to Resume

The Obama administration is expected to revive military-run trials for terror suspects being detained at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba - but with new legal protections not provided under the Bush administration.

Senior U.S. officials say the new system will limit the use of hearsay, ban evidence gained through harsh treatment, give defendants more freedom to choose their own counsel, and provide more protections for detainees who refuse to testify.

President Barack Obama, who criticized the Bush-era system as a failure, is expected to ask for a 120-day delay in pending cases while the legal system is adjusted.

Mr. Obama suspended the trials shortly after taking office in January, pending an official review, but he did not rule out restarting them.

Mr. Obama's decision is likely to draw fire from civil rights advocates and his Democratic supporters, who are already upset over his decision Wednesday to block the release of more photos depicting detainee abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan at the hands of U.S. troops.

There are 241 detainees being held at the Guantanamo U.S. military prison, which President Obama has promised to close by January.

Former President George W. Bush created the military tribunal system to hear cases against "enemy combatants" being held at Guantanamo.

The fig leaf he presents, that concerning no evidence can be used if obtained through water boarding or harsh tactics, is absurd!

Obama realizes that he can not bring every member of the military in to testify.

Obama realizes that he can not give these animals a full trial with the rights granted to American Citizens.

Obama might also realize that he should not bring these animals onto American soil!

This is fun to watch!

I would add, of course:

There is a difference between what can be done, morally, to convict someone of a crime and -—

WHAT MUST BE DONE, DAMN THE “LAW”, TO PROTECT HUMAN LIFE!

I am all for full blown, awful, painful, life threatening TORTURE if it saves America from a WMD in the hands of a terrorist.

Water boarding is NOT torture!

We’ll never get an apology from him, but Obama reversing his positions and thereby affirming Bush’s policies on Gitmo speaks volumes.

This just shows what an amateur Obama really is when it comes to making critical decisions. He cannot make decisions without weighing the polls and vacillating. Hillary was right about one thing, Obama is not the guy you want answering that 2 AM crisis call to the What House.

Given these idiots “logic”, the tribunals will become kangaroo courts in reverse where they prosecute the prosecutors.
