The town council's public safety committee voted against allowing hybrid vehicles to park for free.
There will be no free parking in Doylestown for "green" vehicles.
Doylestown Council's public safety committee unanimously voted Wednesday to reject a proposal to allow hybrid and electric vehicles to park in borough lots and at borough meters for free. Their vote was met with applause from the 15 business owners and residents who attended the meeting.
The free parking program was proposed by Assistant Borough Manager Phil Ehlinger in an April 23 memo to council. He suggested allowing "green" vehicles to park for free as long as their owners followed the borough's other parking regulations. Ehlinger suggested the program as a way to encourage people to buy new, environmentally-friendly vehicles. The borough's environmental advisory council endorsed the proposal.
And at least one council member seemed to think it was a good idea. Councilman Don Berk said he thought that allowing "green" vehicles to park for free would be making a statement that Doylestown is an environmentally friendly community.
"There's already a statement about that," Councilman John Buckman said.
Buckman said he didn't see how the program would benefit the general public.

People in Bucks County still have some common sense apparently.
Any idiot who would even entertain this proposal is too stupid to be empowered with any elected or appointed political office.
No, but it would encourage a lot of resentment toward the people who own these cars.
BTW, anybody know what it costs to replace the battery in one of these things?
Except in California.
What about the arsine emissions from all of those batteries???
Sure, free parking in Doylestown is going to make me buy a more expensive car. What's the break even time for this?
As someone who lives in Bucks County about the only surprise is that it didn’t pass. We’ve got a lot of tree huggers in the county. Doylestown is a small town which also happens to be the county seat. Parking is really at a premium downtown by the court house. I’m sure they make a nice buck on that considering its metered parking every where. Its a revenue issue, nothing else.
It is surprising it didn’t pass. I grew up here, and it is scary how the electorate has changed. . .
On the other hand, I go into the center of Doylestown occasionally and there is parking available - I think the people complaining about it are too lazy to walk a block or two!
When I can’t find a place to park, can I park my evil, diesel-swilling SUV with a 42-gallon tank on top of a hybrid?
Enquiring minds want to know......
There will be no free parking in Doylestown for “green” vehicles
How about my RED SUV truck?
People who drive hybrids are more equal than others.....at least to some people.
Downright scary!
This sums up most of the "green" proposals. They make no economic sense, and survive with government subsidies that drive up costs for everyone else.
But it gives a nice warm feeling for a few moments.
