WASHINGTON (AFP) Former vice president Dick Cheney stepped up his assault on President Barack Obama on Tuesday, warning he was making "huge" mistakes on the economy and stripping America's anti-terror arsenal.
Cheney, who has emerged as a fierce defender of the last US administration -- while former president George W. Bush's has remained silent -- also said Obama's plan to close the Guantanamo Bay terror camp was a "terrible" idea.
"Bottom line is, we successfully defended the nation for seven-and-a-half years against a follow-on attack to 9/11," Cheney said in an interview with Fox Business Network.
"That was a remarkable achievement. Nobody would have thought that was possible, but it was. I believe it was possible because of the policies we had in place, which they're now dismantling."
Cheney defended the harsh CIA interrogation methods used on terror suspects, branded by critics as torture, which the Obama administration has halted.
He also weighed in on Guantanamo Bay camp which Obama has vowed to close within a year.
"I think it's a terrible idea," Cheney said.
Cheney's interview represented his second attack on the administration within three days, especially targeting anti-terror policies repudiating the tactics of the former Bush administration.
"I think that we are stripping ourselves of some of the capabilities that we used in order to block, if you will, or disrupt activities by Al-Qaeda that would have led to additional attacks," Cheney said.

I have wondered for a couple years why the White House had not let Cheney out to defend the administration. It is obvious now that Bush would not let him. What a shame. I have pretty much supported Bush through thick and thin, but their silence letting the media, Hollywood and Dems shape American public opinion sickens me.
Cheney would have been such a powerful and disciplined spokesperson from 2005-2008. I love his motivation to get out now and lay down a coherent defense.
CHENEY 2012
Make it so!!
Too bad we didn’t get dick in 2008. We got stuck with a sure loser - McCain!
It’s nice to see there is at least one republican with the balls to tell the truth. Wish there were more of our elected republican “representatives” that would step up to the plate and take on the socialists.
Cheney is a patriot and a great American.
“Cheney, who has emerged as a fierce defender of the last US administration ...”
No, Dick Cheney is a fierce defender of AMERICA.
Also, I am sorry to observe that I don’t believe Mr. Cheney is well, as evidenced by his breathing in these recent interviews.
Cheney’s their huckleberry...
It's not just Bush thought it's the same MO the world over regarding the bullying we let the left get away with.
It looks like someone has stepped forward to offer the GOP some leadership.
This is Cheney’s rightful role, and the reason there has been a leadership vacuum in the Republican Party is because of Cheney’s declining to take the torch and run for president, breaking tradition for sitting VPs.
The second mouse gets the cheese.
You forgot “brains” and “America’s best interest at heart.”
I’ve also noticed his shortness of breath.
Said prayer for him today. God bless him.
I love Vice President Cheney, and Mrs. Cheney. The more I see of Liz, the more I like her. Wish she would run for office.
we didn't get dick, but we sure got screwed...
Thinking like that will get you killed. History is full of examples.

How about “Gaff proof” too ?
The left cannot accurately state, describe, define why they Hate Cheney. Its just pure HATE......and for me its PURE ENTERTAINMENT.
How to make a Liberal Angry ....Tell them the TRUTH !
Here’s what I think happened:
Obama went to his first tippity top secret meeting and found out that we’re in a lot of danger, still. He discovered sphincter muscles that he didn’t know existed and immediately a plan was hatched to release this “torture” information and further demoralize the nation and tar and feather Bush so that WHEN the next attack happens...the obamaspinbots can just say, “Well, we had it coming. Al Qaeda’s jihad got stronger because we were effective in stopping them...and we did it the wrong way...”
You got it! I always liked Cheney - the strong, silent type. He’s a man’s man. I hope he keeps it up - he’s got nothing to lose and he doesn’t give a flip anyway - he knows he is right and I agree with him.
You are mad max....just plain ol crazy. Cheney was alive and well and on attack while there.
Your so anxious to bash Bush you trailed off into fantasy land
You know, with...
* Gitmo terrorists released in this country,
* Hamas terrorists brought here on our dime,
* Somalis ferrying back & forth to AQ training,
* islam taught in US public schools on our dime,
* the Flight 93 islam memorial,
* Hawaii’s ‘Islam Day’ of 9/11 on the ancient calendar,
* multiple moslems now under consideration/employed by 0bama et al in DC
and
* the dropping of using detection for nuclear devices at US ports,
you might begin to think 0bama, Pelosi, Reid, and the democrat party membership is actively seeking attacks by moslems and islamic extremists on US sovereign soil.
Next we’ll be hearing that DoD should release all kinds of photos and other things displaying unflattering images of Iraqi and other nations’ prisoners or something, which raise suicide bombings directed at US servicemen and women.
Or, maybe 0bama will throw thousands of US troops at Taliban strongholds in AfPak areas, without help of most allies.
Or, maybe 0bama/Soros will send US troops to areas known for using chemical weapons in the ME.
Or, maybe 0bama will refuse to permit USN/USMC/Spec Ops forces to attack pirates when moslems might be killed.
Gee, who’d think US government representatives or ‘leadership’ would actually do such things? After all, over 3000 US citizens and persons of other countries were killed on US soil in 2001, many of whom were literally disintegrated beyond recognition. The ‘leadership’ of the US would not vacate the primary function of government to defend its people, now, would it?
