Wanda Sykes Was Funny (get over it) [Editorial]
Kansas City Star ^ | 5/11/09 | Yael T. Abouhalkah

Oh, boy, Wanda Sykes is in trouble. That's what you get when you make fun of Rush Limbaugh.

But while conservatives were screaming Monday, let's face it: Sykes said something mean but also funny about the right-leaning Limbaugh at the White House Correspondents Association dinner Saturday night.

Boy, Rush Limbaugh said he hopes this administration fails – so you said you hope America fails ....To me, that's treason. He's not saying anything differently than what Osama bin Laden is saying. You know, you might want to look into this, sir, 'cause I think maybe Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker, but he was just so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight.

These dinners are supposed to feature sharp-elbowed humor, and Sykes delivered.

In fact, she also poked plenty of fun at President Barack Obama and others in his administration, a required part of the program.

But by Monday afternoon, her comments on Limbaugh were drawing ridicule from the right -- and a bit of admonition from the White House.

Spokesman Robert Gibbs said he hadn't talked to the president, but added:

"I think there are a lot of topics that are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy. I think there's no doubt 9/11 is part of that."

Then again, Sykes wasn't joking about people being murdered by terrorists. She was comparing Limbaugh to a terrorist for his comments about the Obama administration.

Over the top? Probably. Funny? To some, yes. As Sykes even said after her comparison of Limbaugh to a terrorist:

"Too much? But you're laughing inside."

Yes, plenty of Limbaugh critics were doing just that on Monday, even as they awaited the usual apology from the White House and others who attack the radio talk-show host.

I didn’t listen to all of Rush today, hope he didn’t give this woman the time of day. This is the first I’ve heard of her.

I had never heard of Wanda and did not know who she was. Then I clicked her on U TUBE. Now I understand. Her mediocrity and lack of class, the double standard, and the low expectations are now understood. It’s an affirmative action thing.

I think you people are being far too judgmental. Didn't you hear all those Bill Ayers jokes? The ones about Rev. Jeremiah Wright just laid me out laughing! I thought the ones about B.O.'s questionable birth certificate and all the Kenya humor were really great and almost as funny as the Air Force One NYC photo op cracks.

You didn't hear those? Oh...

Rush's response? No response.

Rush knows that to respond every time some no name loudmouth has something $hitty to say about him, he would never have time for cigars or a radio show.

“If anyone has something in common with Osama, it’s Obama. They BOTH have friends who’ve bombed the Pentagon.”

Brutally true!

'Wanda Sykes is a lesbian comedienne who has a bit of a hard-edged humor. Her forte is the tart retort. She had a supporting role in Monster-in-Law (2005) as prospective mother-in-law Jane Fonda's executive assistant and driver.'

...Two major reasons I refused to watch this film upon its release: A soulless, unfunny 'comedienne' (Marsha Warfield was much funnier on NBCs 1980s sitcom Night Court) and an anti-American turncoat who tarnished the good name of an acting dynasty.

Which one was the soulless comedienne -- Wanda Sykes or J-Lo? (I can't imagine you already knew who Sykes was, or that she was sapphic. Before Monster-in-Law she'd only had her standup gigs, a few guest gigs on late-night, and an occasional visiting role on Wayans's show, Seinfeld, Will and Grace, and so on.)

Oh, really? She did? Guess that promotes her remarks from wished-she-was-funny to decidedly unfunny.

I know it's vain and stupid to offer some bromide like, "what goes around" -- because what the liberals and Dems did under FDR in the 30's and 40's has never come around or been rectified, FDR was just too wickedly clever and powerful, and now we're stuck with the payoff for his poison. But in Sykes's case, I'll offer it anyway, and just hope she gets her due bill. The Kansas City Star, too -- they haven't yet paid for inflicting Walter Cronkite on us.

Only crass, hate filled leftists would think that it was funny to wish someone dead on national tv in front of the president of the US, and only a crass, leftist, president would laugh at the statement.

No one mentioned Obama made fun of the swine flu in his Hillary joke. I’m not sure that anyone even got the joke.

Let’s go over this hilarious joke.

Let’s start with the premise. Rush Limbaugh is a bad guy because he disagrees with us politically and he is very successful at getting other people to agree with him. Now let’s add that once, Rush Limbaugh was addicted to opiate painkillers. But he went to rehab and fought back his addiction.

This last is worthy of ridicule because liberals don’t like Rush Limbaugh. It’s worthy of praise, nay, adoration, if he were a liberal. Anyone in entertainment who recovers from addiction receives standing ovations and great parts in movies. But if you are not liberal, then you will forever be mocked for your previous weakness.

Therefore just being able to say that Rush is intoxicated on Oxycontin is HILARIOUS because really, what you are saying is that you hate Rush and he is a big [insert stupid playground insult here — I like Poopyhead]. And that was funny to the bullies in 2nd grade, and it’s still funny to liberals today.

Next, let’s throw in 9/11. It was a horrible day in which evil terrorists plotted and successfully murdered 3000 of our brothers and sisters, innocents all. Liberals don’t like to think about it, because they like to confuse themselves about who their enemy really is. But let’s add to the very funny joke already (if you are an ex-2nd grade bully and love kicking people for their past weaknesses, and if you hate conservative thought and the right of others to have it) by calling Limbaugh the missing 20th terrorist.

This is funny because when it’s said, everyone instantly knows that it’s a bad thing to say. There really were REAL enemies on that day who did REALLY bad things, not just voice opposition to liberalism on the radio. But this gets all confused in the liberals’ minds, because they already see Rush Limbaugh as the real enemy, and this juxtaposition twists at their consciences a little. Yes, indeed, Rush Limbaugh wanted to kill us all, see how dangerous he is, but he couldn’t because he is a dumb poopyhead and not as good as us because he once had an addiction problem.

See, now you can laugh happily at this very funny joke.

Or not.

I guess both J-Lo and Wanda could tie, but my animus is towards Sykes for her tasteless and vulgar humor. J-Lo, though more of a mannequin than an actress or singer, is rather inoffensive compared to her co-stars of Monster.
