Needed: a new name or better acronym for Tea Parties?? (very brief Vanity)
5/11/09 | self

“TEA” in Tea Parties has been interpreted as standing for “Taxed Enough Already.” This is catchy and a clever linkage to the original Boston Tea Party. However it is such a narrow acronym that it seriously understates the scope of the current protest movement and lends credence to the left’s assertion that Tea Party protestors are just greedy rich people afraid they’ll have to pay a little more in taxes. The hundreds of thousands who are involved in today’s Tea Party movement are well informed Americans, deeply concerned about a host of issues beyond taxes: national security, socialization, corruption, voter fraud, illegal immigration, and abortion, to name just a few. It seems to me the movement would be better served a better served by a different definition of the acronym “TEA” or an entirely new name – something stronger than tea. Do you agree? If so, your thoughts and creative suggestions could be helpful to protest organizers and participants.

Tea party is just fine. The “tea bagging” thing is quite tangential and won’t stick. Plus, it made the other side look petty, as usual.

The “taxed enough already” thing is fine as well, since it’s clear with the current deficit forecast that taxes will have to go through the roof. Plus, we’re looking at stealth robbery via high inflation - deliberate, government induced inflation is nothing less than taxation, except there’s zero due process. I believe high inflation is coming soon.

BIG TEA PARTY JULY 4!

A new name is not needed.

Keep TEA Party, and keep the focus on substance rather than style and charm.

Tea party is just fine.

Yep! I'd like to see the GOP replaced completely by the TEA. And tea is a better symbol than an elephant, IMO. It has a familiarity to Americans, a historic context to refer to, one that says "fed up and fightin' mad!" very conveniently in 3 little letters.

The focus really should be on how 0bama and the Democrats are bankrupting the country and dismantling the free market economy. Higher taxes and out of control inflation factor in primarily as what is inevitably in the near future as 0bama’s government begins to collapse as it can no longer pay its bills.

Instead of “borrowing” from the past, be original. Make our own history. A simple “I REFUSE” works better than any acronym or catchy phrase.

Your use of “Engaged” recalls two ideas I had: “Totally Engaged Americans” and “Thousands of Engaged Americans”

‘but I get a little miffed that wags in the liberal MSM and some leftists pols have called us “Tea-Baggers”’

It just shows how slimy and petty they are, and it’s a reach. I like that old saying about insults “If it’s not true, why do you care? If it is true, what’s the problem?” heh

Let the insults roll off, and hit ‘em where it hurts!

GOP 2010!

Oh as far as I am concerned we are TEA BAGGING them....

but as far as you GOP 2010...

I have grave reservations about doing anymore backing of these liberal-moderates....the GOP needs to prove something to me before I support more than individuals with my vote. My dollars are out of the mix.

Don't change horses in mid stream. A change would be a indicate weakness and show that The Tea Party People can be influenced by the ratz.

I agree. No matter what name is used, the slime on the left and their friends in the mainstream media will continue to misrepresent what the movement is all about, ridicule the participants, and do their best to marginalize the movement.

Well...I’m generally somewhere right of Cheney. ;-) I’m no supporter of McCain or other RINOs at this point (though I sure would have rather had him than 0bama).

The important thing is that there’s no other party with a chance of defeating large numbers of Dem congresscritters in 2010. Campaign for the conservative ones!

Failure better not be an option in 2010, or our country might not even be recognizable by 2012!

R.O.G.U.E.

Reduce Our Government Until Efficient

To be honest, and inefficient government is just fine. Can you imaging how bad government would be if it were efficient? It needs to be starved of funds.

For me the newest problems are reckless spending, bailouts, payoffs, and trillions in new debt.

TEA PARTY beats the HELL out of ACORN.....

Yeah.

We're in a tough spot here. The media will portray these protests as "anti-tax" rallies, as in rallies by "rich people who resent paying their fair share of taxes," as long as they can get away with it. OTOH, there is good will associated with the name, based on the original Tea Party. And the "brand" has been established. We won't need to advertise the July 4th Tea Parties as heavily as the 4/15 Tea Parties, since the name is already well-recognized.

An effort to rename the Parties could be seen as disingenuous, like the ridiculous change from "global warming" to "climate change." So... we should probably launch a re-education campaign, and change what "the brand" stands for, as when Marlboro changed into a man's cigarette. To that end, I suggest a tag-line or introductory phrase, like the "anti-spending Tea Parties," or the "Tea Parties protesting out-of-control spending."

The media won't do this, but we conservatives can do this, and hopefully the message will penetrate public consciousness.
