CIA Terror Suspects 'Kept Awake For 11 Days'
The Times of London ^ | 5/10/09 | Anne Barrowclough

Posted on 05/10/2009 3:23:17 PM PDT by lewisglad

More than 25 of the CIA's war-on-terror prisoners were subjected to sleep deprivation for as long as 11 days at a time during the administration of former president George Bush.

At one stage during the war on terror, the Central Intelligence Agency was allowed to keep prisoners awake for as long as 11 days, citing memoranda made public by the Justice department last month.

The limit was later reduced to just over a week, the report stated.

Sleep deprivation was one of the most important elements in the CIA's interrogation programme, seen as more effective than more violent techniques used to help break the will of suspects.

Within the CIA it was seen as having the advantage of eroding a prisoner's will without leaving lasting damage.

When detainees could no longer stand, they could be laid on the prison floor with their limbs "anchored to a far point on the floor in such a manner that the arms cannot be bent or used for balance or comfort," a memo dated May 10, 2005, said.

"The position is sufficiently uncomfortable to detainees to deprive them of unbroken sleep, while allowing their lower limbs to recover from the effects of standing," it said

I was kept sitting on a chair, shackled by hands and feet for two to weeks," said suspected Al Qaeda operative Abu Zubaydah, the first prisoner captured by the CIA, according to the Red Cross report. "If I started to fall asleep, a guard would come and spray water in my face."

Since most cities are chock full of libtards, I’d sacrifice any of them.

I have a good friend who was a USMC scout sniper in Desert Storm who didn’t sleep for 3 months after he got home.

Poor little babies. Back in the 1960s AM radio disk jockeys would stay awake for long periods of time (11 days) as a publicity stunt.

We could have just cut his head off instead!

Did the Red Cross interview Daniel Pearl about his treatment? I forgot, they didn't get a chance, even if they wanted to because the enemy did CUT HIS HEAD OFF!

Yeah. I heard it. Eric is a thug. He's probably a traitor. He will eventually need to be tended to by the law.

That's why we have to take back the Congress real soon.

None of the terrorists needed to be subjected to enhanced interrogation. All they had to do was talk and the methods stopped.

I did four days once. Like you, I began hallucinating and decided to stop because I worked in a machine shop environment with metal working tools and saws.

But I found it actually got easier to stay awake after day two. Going from day 2 to 3 and then onward to 4 was fairly easy compared to the first 48 hours. It was just the whole not being able to rely on my mind thing that freaked me out. It became difficult to decide what was real and what was not real. I spent a lot of time obsessed with some ants that were getting into my house...

I’m pretty sure I could do longer if I had some time set aside and didn’t have to go to work or drive or anything. But I’ve got better ways to spend my holiday time ;-)

If some researcher wanted to pay me to do it, I’d be happy to accomodate him.

How about a little hand-wringing for their victims and their victims’ families?

I know. I had dental work Friday and the student working on me, (Yes, I am brave and like to pay 1/3 the cost for work, so I let students have a go) she called me a “bad reporter”. I told her that I am not, in fact, a journalist. She explained that I was not reporting pain...when I SHOULD have been reporting a lot more pain.

So, maybe I should get waterboarded for charity.

I hope these prisoners got DENTAL CARE!!!
