President Barack Obama met Saturday with a US cargo ship captain who was held hostage by Somali pirates last month before a dramatic high-seas rescue by US Navy snipers.
Obama hosted Maersk Alabama Captain Richard Phillips and his wife, Andrea, in the Oval Office for a visit that had not been publicly announced by the White House.
Phillips was also due to attend Saturday's White House Correspondents Association dinner, an annual meet of Washington's press corps elite, politicians and celebrities. Obama is set to host the event.

Jimmy Carter without balls meets a captain who carries his around in a wheelbarrow.
Captain Richard Phillips would make a fine Presidential Cabinet appointee; unfortunately he is not qualified for that post.
He has paid his taxes.
Was the teleprompter present?
He is rescued from pirates only to spend time with another one! ;-)
Phillips & wife (to their credit) look like they’re doing their ‘duty’ by being there....but not enjoying it....look at their body language (especially hers)...very stiff.
Okay Captain Phillips, here's what I expect from you and this is what I will do for you in return if you play along...don't disappoint me with my political endeavors.
Probably wanted to interrogate him in hope of getting proof that the SEAL’s violated orders by shooting.
Did the Cap’n make sure he had his wallet on him when he left?
Obama pirated more money out of me than the pirates did.
If I were Capt. Phillips, I would have asked him one question: “What the hell took you so long?”
A hero gets stuck having to meet a zero.
BUMP!
That's not even the right question.
"Why did it take three trys for the Seals to finally solve the problem Mr. President - it was because you never authorized action wasn't it?" The Captain of the Bainbridge had to take the risk - because you never authorized it - am I right Mr. President...sir?
If you were paying attention to Capt. Phillips first news conference on his return, you would have notice he thanked everyone under the sun except Obama. I’m sure his first question to the Captain of the Bainbridge was why they didn’t shoot the pirates the first time he jumped off the lifeboat. The Captain was most like very frank and open to him resulting in the thank you list.
I heard the Captain’s thank you response on the radio. He expressed his gratitude to the SEALS and the ship, and for the prayers of all. He did not mention BO.
You said it better than I could.
