Census workers going door to door (ACORN nuts wanting to steal your ID? Thug Rahm is in charge...)

Census workers going door to door
By TOM MOOR, Tribune Staff Writer
Story Updated: May 8, 2009 at 6:43 PM EDT

Sharon Sheely said she received quite the scare earlier this week.

When Sheely answered a knock on her door and asked who was there, an unknown man replied only by saying, “Census.”

Believing the man appeared “questionable,” Sheely told him to leave and closed the door.

Aside from the bad manners Sheely said the man had, what she experienced is happening everywhere.

Every residence in this region will receive a visit from the U.S. Census Bureau in the next two months as census workers prepare to verify more than 145 million addresses nationwide.

While some people may already know this, it certainly came as a surprise for Sheely.

“I wasn’t aware anything like this was going on,” said Sheely, of Lakeville.

Sheely contacted The Tribune because she’s worried many people don’t know that census workers are already canvassing neighborhoods.

The effort is part of a nationwide operation to verify, update and inquire about additional living quarters on the premises of residences nationwide — the first step in assuring every housing unit receives a questionnaire in March 2010.

“In our region, they have been instructed to knock on every door,” said Muriel Jackson, spokesman for the Chicago Regional Census Center. “There may have been some instances they didn’t, but as far as I know it’s a procedure.”

South Bend has a census office, but all media inquiries were directed to the Chicago office.

Sheely was concerned because her home had recently been burglarized and she didn’t feel she could trust a stranger at her door. Sheely also mentioned the potential dangers of elderly people being targeted by people posing as census workers.

Workers can be identified by the official Census Bureau badge they carry, Jackson said. The employees will ask only to verify a housing unit’s address and whether there are additional living quarters on the property. Workers will never ask for any bank or Social Security information.

For more information about the 2010 Census, call the Census Bureau’s Partnership and Data Services Division at (312) 454-2770.

The Census Bureau is currently recruiting managers for its new offices to open this fall in each congressional district. For more information, go to www.census.gov.

Guard Cat would mean more if there weren’t so many cutesy Attack Cat signs out there already.

Beware of the Panther?

This is preparatory to the Decennial Census; they need to make sure all places where people are living are accounted for, in the proper location, and have a correct mailing address.

This has happened preparatory to the Census for decades.

Well if push came to shove, most of these could be found via Google Maps.

You seriously believe a man in his 50s in rural Maine is with ACORN?

What do you need - an ACORN badge? (Obamabots come in all shapes, flavors and colors.)

This is the first time in 200 years that the census is being run OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE. You cannot convince me with all that’s at stake in terms of electoral power and cash, that there won’t be funny business going on with these socialists..

Are these guys ACORN? If not how did the gov’t get thousands of workers so quickly?

Umm...the same way they do for every Census; advertising for people for part-time jobs and having fairly low standards.

Again, there may be some census worker somewhere that works for ACORN, but the majority in 1999-2000 were retired folks looking to make some extra money (was hard to recruit because the economy was fairly good). This time around there may be more younger people. In any event, its beyond ridiculous for people to assume they're all from ACORN.

Google Maps doesn’t tell you if someone is living in an apartment above some business. Or if a single-family house has been converted into 6 apartments.

That would work as well.

My GUARD CAT sign is a warning, and a legal disclaimer.

I have an adopted stray, outside, who growls at anyone he is not familiar with.

With the millions of census workers, the odds that any of them also are with ACORN are infintesimal. The accumulation of odd fantasies around the Census is amazing.

Not really, ACORN does nation-wide recruiting of lots of temporary workers to go around and “register” voters...well census does nation-wide hiring of lots of temporary workers to GPS people’s homes. Likely same subset and since the census is being coordinated thru the WH it may have very well subcontracted the hiring thru ACORN; as I recall, they did get a number of “stimulus grants.”

But how many new homes will be built after this survey is completed and home many houses, apartments and condos will be torn down, converted to other uses, etc?

The Census is prohibited from accessing anyone’s personal data from other government agencies - the IRS, FBI, whatever.

The same is true in the opposite direction; Census personal data cannot be accessed by other government agencies.

There is no “Big Government Computer” where all of your information is stored. It’s in bits and pieces scattered around all the various agencies you’ve had business with.

Tell them you’ll answer their questions as soon as Obama produces a valid birth certificate.

Things will change a lot, obviously, before next year; It’s impossible to have perfect address data. During this portion of the survey, though, the workers will note houses under construction and try to find out what their addresses will be so they can be sent forms.

Should add that I saw the workers in my neighborhood—there were 2 men; one in late 30s and one young one. Badges not clearly displayed, but I saw the posts here and called Regional Census offices for IL to confirm. As this is a new administration and new program (these are nott census workers, they are “GPS” coordinates/address takers), I would not be surprised if not subcontracted thru ACORN-type organization. Easy enough to determine if Census has been hiring.../call Regional office & ask if they advertised for workers

I heard, on Monica Crowley's radio show, Rahm just hired over 60,000 census workers. How many if them belong to ACORN? Most of them?

Plus the ACORN folks do have to do something between elections. Now is a dead time so perfect to get into community cataloging.

Not saying that there is a strong connection or not - I don’t know but, as stated above, this is the first time that the WH has gotten directly involved in the census and they have an agenda.

Get a GUARD CAT sign.

A "Beware of Lions" sign works just as well...
