911 Operators deal with a lot. A lot of prank calls, a lot of bogus calls, picking up the phone and getting an earful of profanity is not something that anyone has to tolerate.

Call your doctor, and drop the F-bomb on the nurse that answers. Insult her, threaten her and see where that gets you.

Call your fire dept and swear at them, or maybe your insurance agent. Walk into Walmart and let loose with a string of profanity at the Returns Desk, what will that get you?

Why do you expect a $9/hr civil servant to take the abuse that you wouldn’t dream of dumping on anyone else. They are there to help you, not to be abused by you.

$9/hr civil servant

I think 20-year-veteran Sergeant McFarland makes a BIT more than $9 an hour.

This is a $60K/year police sergeant, according to the video. Did you actually watch the video? Initially, she was just an upset girl saying "I need an f---- ambulance". She was swearing, but not directing abusive language AT the officer. At least not until after the overpaid civil servant HUNG UP on her 911 call without dispatching an ambulance!

Subsequent calls were a bit more heated, but I would be plenty upset too at this point.

A $9/hour civil servant?? Don’t you mean a $62,000/year LEO?
And if he can’t take some hysterical call from an overwrought person, afraid for a life, then he’s too darn sensitive!! There’s a time and a place for reprimand and BEFORE he helps the desperate victim is not the time nor the place.
Even his boss says this, and the “law enforcement” officer has been suspended.

So. Can you admit that your position doesn’t hold water or must you hold onto it merely because that’s the first thing you thought of?

Why would I be expecting a $60,000/yr (per the video) sergeant to be sitting on his donut stuffed dead ass taking 911 calls, rather than a trained 911 call center operator?

She didn't abuse him; HE abused her, by calling HER names; she used bad language to, not AT him. He directed bad language at her.

Using "colorful language" (blue IS a color) while talking to some one is not the same as swearing AT them. One is objectionable; the other is abusive.

Rhett didn't 'give a damn'; but he didn't "damn' Scarlet.

First of all, the officer in question makes $31 an hour, not $9.

Secondly, listen to the recorded calls. HE was out of line. He was decided that disciplining her language was far more important than finding out why she needed an ambulance and even told her she was NOT going to get help. HE hung up on her twice after only two sentences of conversation. He escalated the issued far beyond reasonableness. You have to take people as they come, not as you wish them to be. How would he handle a call from a citizen suffering from Tourette's Syndrome?

His job is not to be judgmental about the language of the caller and to correct her speech... it's to triage the nature of the call and send the appropriate emergency response.
