For a blogger, heaven is having an item linked at Drudge, where it is sure to generate tens if not hundreds of thousands of hits. The first time it happened to me was a NewsBusters item that came to be known as Canoegate. On the Today show, NBCs Michelle Kosinski was dramatically reporting on flooding in New Jersey while seated in a canoe, when suddenly two men walked in front of her, revealing that the water was no more than ankle deep.
Canoegate came to mind while watching NBCs Miguel Almaguer report on wildfires in Santa Barbara, CA on Morning Joe today. From the very beginning, there was something stagey about the piece. It opened with a tight shot of Almaguer, visible only from the waist up, wearing something that made me think of a prisoners jump suit. As he began to speak, he started the talk-and-stroll shtick. If he wanted to be somewhere else for his report, why not set up there in the first place?
In any case, he eventually settled in front of a home that had been destroyed by the wild fire. As youll see in the screencap and video clip, a cheery little fire of campfire size continued to burn away just behind him.

Fiery echo of Canoegate? Ping to Today show list.
Not to denigrate the losses suffered in these fires, but I couldn’t help but wonder while viewing the clip, “What? Where is the doll?....or the teddy bear?...or the charred family photo?”
Just wait until CNN hires Green Helmet Guy.
Nothing can beat the incredibly manipulated media coverage in Lebanon during the Israeli invasion. Scenes ranging from the sickening like the “green helmet” man, a Hammas official posing as a “rescue worker” while choreographing the TV cameras from CNN using the corpse of a child as a prop to the ridiculous, like the “bomb magnet” woman whose multiple houses were bombed in several different parts of Lebanon on a single day. Who could forget the photoshopped Reuters picture of the fires in Beirut that had been enhanced by crudely cloning the smoke or the pristine right out of the box Mickey Mouse toy propped up in the ruins of a bombed house.
Hey! ..it is G.E. State TV isn't it?
That remains one of the most LMAO things I’ve ever seen from a news show.
I sometimes wonder whether those two guys purposely walked in front of Kosinsi just to prove what a fraud she was. They were probably watching her report in disgust at the phoniness and then decided to let the viewers see just what the real deal was.
Good point! Staged fire?
Just ran across this post, but link doesn’t work in English, and web searches for canoegate don’t work either. Oy vey.
