Alda is why the early MASH episodes are great and the later ones suck.

“The first three seasons are classic. Once Wayne Rogers and McLean Stevenson left, the preaching began. “
I could never handle the totally anti-military, anti-American script they had from the start . . . I understand that the original writers of the movie were shocked to discover that MASH was one step above Jane Fonda as far as pro-communist and anti-Americanism.

He also costarred for six years on The Dead Zone. That's the show with Anthony Michael Hall.
But it sounds like the ultimate put-down.
What have you been doing for the last 20 years? Costarring on the dead zone?

Wow. I thought for sure I read that he was and wasn’t ashamed of it. I remember also reading that all his castmates were aware of the fact.

Ring Lardner Jr., who wrote the movie's screenplay, actually had been a Communist.

Anyone who is described like that is a big pain in the ass! They usually end up on school broads or city counsels or homeowner associations!

Ring Lardner Jr., who wrote the movie's screenplay, actually had been a Communist. Richard Hooker, who wrote the books was furious at the film and TV treatment of his work. He was a solid right winger.

"M*A*S*H" actor David Ogden Stiers has finally come out, saying he's no longer afraid to be gay." AFRAID TO BE GAY? Oh please! Isn't that pretty much a prerequisite for a successful career in Holywierd these days? I'm generally astounded when one of these folks comes out in support of traditional marriage such as Miss California. We've all seen the terrible price that she has paid. Saying your gay in that town is about as brave as saying that you're a Democrat in Teddy (The U-Boat Commander) Kennedy's district.

“Why do any of us need to know that? Why?”
Exactly. It’s symptomatic of the narcissism typified by homosexual persons and many in the acting profession.

He is married with kids and is a born again Christian. So was Ted Haggard.

Yes, so very proud that he waits until age 66 to tell usI guess he's having trouble picking up the young guys now, so he is widening his options, hoping for some groupies. Any groupies.

All I can say is that M*A*S*H improved enormously with the replacement of the feckless Frank Burns with the Charles Winchester characters. Frank Burns was a punching bag for all of M*A*S*H's anti-military shtick and a once-funny joke told ad-nauseum. Winchester was written to be able to hold his own and even triumph at times. The episode where he finds music for the pianist soldier with only a left hand remains in my mind.
Unlike the idiotic stereotypes pandered by the left and homophiles, I can admire and separate someone like Mr Stiers and earlier, Charles Nelson Reilly or Paul Lynde, from their acting skills and from their lifestyles. It is an interesting fact of life that the 'acting life' and other cultural professions do seem to draw the homosexual practitioners.

Richard Hooker, who wrote the books was furious at the film and TV treatment of his work. He was a solid right winger.I came across his latter book (before the numerous ghost-written knock-offs), "M*A*S*H Goes to Maine" that made his conservative credentials clear. One remembered comment made by Hooker in his guise of Hawkeye indicated his antipathy for Democrats and liberals in general.
