In what time period? Israel had a program to produce their own fighter jets about twenty years ago and produced prototypes. But they abandoned the program because of the high cost and decided to continue purchasing from the US and make some modifications. And during the last year of W they were negotiating to buy bunker buster bombs. Not sure how that turned out.
Israel can eventually produce most anything, but they can't just start producing jets and all the armament in a matter of a few years. They are not self-sufficient when it comes to defense, and that's unfortunate and will put them under a lot of pressure if Obama changes US policy to the extent it seem he might.
I'm still listening for some strong Republican response to these possible changes in US foreign policy.
Obama is their golden calf.
Wow! I've always felt that way, but that particular grouping of words really hits the nail on the head. You've described the vast majority of our fellow Jews in the blue states and, unfortunately, quite a number in the red states (even, shamefully, here in Texas).
In the minds of NYers, perhaps.
In the minds of taxpaying citizens across the Republic?
911 suggested otherwise.
Be that as it may, I get what you mean. ;^)
"One literally NEVER hears pro-life, pro-2nd amendment, anti-gay marriage chatter, etc."
In an urban area consisting of how many people, 13 million? ~More?
Actually, the three issues you specifically cite make sense.
For grins, by the numbers:
1) "Pro-Life" -- to many there're too many, as it is.
2) "Anti-2nd" -- NOW only the crooks have guns. See the logic?
3) "Anti-Gay" anything -- Where do gays seem to concentrate/congregate? NYCity, San Francisco, North Hollyweird etc.
"This makes for a philosophical monoculture that is self-reinforcing and impervious to reason or ridicule."
I'll bet it does, impregnable.
We are my friend talking about enormous populations here, who, know all-too-well the value of organization(s), organizing and then the follow through, acting.
"The desire to be seen as cool, and accepted by others in the social climbing world, trumps everything."
Human nature's awfully tough to overcome, peer pressure an enormous force conformity. Considering who we speak of, the irony's somewhat humorous.
It's even tougher to detect this behavior occurring within oneself when all appears peachy keen, also.
Peer pressure intertwined with the human need for "validation" accounts for most of what's interpreted as a nuclear bond, and for NYers at large it might just be. Be an interesting question to pose to the learned poster, Quix.
"Yes, their niche in the social pecking order is seen as far more important than trifles like the very existence of the Jewish state."
HA!!
Well, we'll see what the state of Israel has to say about that. ;^)
Right now our quisling mediots *&* Vichy Republicans are trying to make GREAT hay of zerO's supposed intention, I wonder how the Israeli media's dealing with it.
While *I* see this as only a trial balloon at thos stage. Since I noticed you've been around as long as I? The meaning of that term's well understood, thanks to a painful 8 years of Clintigula. It's deja vu all over again. ~eh? :o)
"The relentless anti-Israel propaganda has taken its toll, decade upon decade."
Yes, it has.
However in the absence of *anything* that'd cause an equal and opposite force, why not?
The EaOF's in the form of unintended consequences are en-route, as we correspond.
Fact.
Keep the faith.
So.
What is it that brought & keeps you in Gotham City, anyway?
Curious.
FYI & FWIW when my wife & I had to relo back to our state of origin I told her no more cities and no more subdivisions!
Or, no more Mr. NiceGuy for your promotions!
We're now in the peace and absolute quiet of the proverbial "sticks".
I've a legit shot at sanity, while she a legit shot at not becoming a widow. ;^)
I don't know, but I have a feeling that it sounds suspiciously like "FUBO!"
Zionists in 1871? I don’t believe that there was such a movement until the late 1800’s (1897 was the first World Zionist Congress, inspired by Herzl’s reaction to the 1894 French treason trial for Alfred Dreyfus, a French officer who was Jewish). Jews didn’t really start large-scale immigration to what was then called “Palestine” until the early 1880’s.
Maybe you have your date wrong?
They can buy what they need for a couple of years, make what they need afterwards. Pushed into a corner, what would ANY country with any self-respect do?
Also, I would bet that any nation in danger would pull out all of the stops to do ANYTHING necessary to defend itself. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to Israel, but I took a tour of Hezekiah’s Tunnel (just south of Temple Mount, in the old City of David). Some 2,700 years ago, the Israelites/Jews of the time hacked a 1/2 kilometer long tunnel out of solid rock in 9 months, in order to ensure a supply of fresh water during the impending siege by Assyria. No dynamite, no power tools, no computers - you can see the places in the ceiling where it was chopped with an ax.
Never underestimate the power of desperation. That’s how 600,000 Jews with few aircraft, tanks or artillery defeated 100 times that number of Arabs. Miracles don’t hurt, either, and if any nation is going to get them, recent history suggests it is Israel.
Also 1 Thess 5:3.
As for me, I am in NYC because I was born and raised here, and as a result am a density/stimulation junkie. I've lived very briefly in other places, and I quickly get bored.
OTOH, once the kids are grown and gone, and if the taxes here get much more stupid, I'll say au revoir to Gotham. I love the place, but I refuse to be a slave to the municipal unions.
Oh, I totally agree.
I almost wish someone does something stupid so the ISF can once again show the planet how it's done ;^)
"As for me, I am in NYC because I was born and raised here, and as a result am a density/stimulation junkie."
You hit the mother-lode, if that's the case.
Besides, it's home for you & your family. There's nothing the the familiarity of home, wherever home is.
I wished it wasn't what it is, NNYer.
My passion (& business) is everything Tiffany.
Where else on Earth may one find more Tiffany then NYCity?
"I've lived very briefly in other places, and I quickly get bored."
HA!!
I assure you, you'de love to visit where we're at; but, prolonged exposure would reduce you to a basket case.
Way too quiet, save for the plaintiff call of The Allento Express speeding through the Kettle Moraine, in the distance.
Here one actually knows who their neighbors are & what they are, and for good or bad. Know where they live, what they drive, their kids etc.
That --for me-- in the beginning took some getting used to. I so do love my privacy, anonymity; which, curiously enough I'd always enjoyed in an urban setting. Not so, in the country. Strange paradox, no?
"OTOH, once the kids are grown and gone, and if the taxes here get much more stupid, I'll say au revoir to Gotham."
Perfectly understandable.
Heck Rush left for the same reason, and The Donald implied he'd been considering doing likewise, himself.
Those two are prominently known people, how many other common citizens have we not heard about?
Only Bloomberg, Schumer and Gillibrand know for sure, that much we know.
"I love the place, but I refuse to be a slave to the municipal unions."
It is an amazing place for the arts, culture, dripping with history. My main impression's derived from a couple friends. One summer they decided to jump in their car and drive to the east coast and specifically, NYCity. HA!! Of course they anticipated traffic congestion, I don't *think* they'd any idea it'd be what it was.
Their story concerns how they'd located Grant's Tomb on a map, drove there to see it, and what happened to them after they'd arrived; therein, lies the tale.
Best left to one of the two, "Braveman", to tell.
Let's see if he'll come in & play, share his story with you.
(He'll be surly if we disturb him planting his flowers, but what the hell, it's a good story. :o) )
HEY BRAVEMAN!! {~shining the "Braveman" light in the sky to summon 'em}
I could not tell you who is in the apartment next to mine, but the folks a dozen floors above me were on the Madoff list.
HA!!!
You had a list (w/ addresses, I presume)!!
But see what I mean concerning anonymity?
Honestly, it's a wonder I feel as I do concerning urban settings. :^)
I opened the pdf, and searched for my address. Childsplay.
HA!!
If you're old enough to recall the original ? You'd see what struck me funny.
You --inadvertently, I realize-- sounded like the episode where McCoy's trying to put Spok's brain back in. :o)
I’m not of the body. ;)
BWHAAAAA!!
Well NNYer, errrrr, neighbor?
You *probably* should've shaddap.
Because, you sure are now. :o)
Amen! Prophecy is being fullfilled today!
Obama better first demand and secure a halt to the Islamic population proliferation/birthrate surrounding the miniscule state of Israel.
Any nuclear disarmament demands from Israel by Obama must surely cause much amusement in Israelthey’ve had the bear-with-it requests before: during the 1930’s and 1940’s when six million Jews were killed.
I admire Israel as much as anyone and know they'll do everything for the survival of their nation. But your response contains the problem. An unfriendly US administration can refuse to sell them the military equipment and parts they need. I mentioned the bunker busters, and it looks like the Bush administration sold them to Israel. But Obama could put lots of pressure on them by refusing to sell needed parts and equipment:
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1020702.html
I doubt Obama would have allowed that.
