In 1998, the year Hugo Chavez was elected president, there were 22,000 Jews in Venezuela. Today the Jewish population is estimated at between 10,000 and 15,000.
Those numbers tell a story, and it's not a happy one. The Jews of Venezuela are fleeing to Miami, Madrid and elsewhere because of the anti-Semitism they face at home. In an interview this week in Washington, D.C., the country's chief rabbi sounds a warning bell: "There's anxiety in the Jewish community because of what has happened," says Rabbi Pynchas Bremer, "and of course because of what may happen."
Mr. Chavez's vitriol about Jews is well documented and of long standing.

"Meanwhile, Rabbi Bremer, the chief rabbi of Venezuela, asks that the world pay attention to the plight of Jews in his country. "We don't know what the future holds for us," he says. But he believes Mr. Chavez pays attention to world opinion. "I hope we will hear from the world community if there is future deterioration."
Rabbi Herzfeld is blunter: "I think we're in the early stages of something catastrophic."

I wonder how many supported Chavez in the beginning? I wonder how many support Obama? I have always been a big supporter of Israel and Jews but the past few years have soured me. I may have reached the point that I don’t care anymore. I can’t see myself supporting people on a suicide mission and in the process taking me down with them.

“Iran increases its political and economic presence in Latin America, defying the United States and attempting to undermine American hegemony. It also foments radical Shiite Islamization and exports Irans revolutionary ideology, using Hezbollah to establish intelligence, terrorism and crime networks, liable to be exploited against the United States and Israel.”

“CLINTON SAYS IDEOLOGY ‘SO YESTERDAY’ — MARXISTS DISAGREE”
May 6, 2009
International News Analysis Today
By Toby Westerman
SNIPPET: “U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently declared that “ ideology is so yesterday.” Several days after Clinton made her statement, the president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, publically described himself as a “Marxist-Leninist” - a distinctly ideological stance. Morales is a close ally of President Hugo Chavez who has made his version of Marxism, which he calls “21st century socialism,” the national dogma of Venezuela.
Clinton’s remarks were made in response to reference to President Barack Obama’s building “bridges” to Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and other leaders hostile to the United States.”
