Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Saturday that it's time for the Republican Party to give up its "nostalgia" for the heyday of the Reagan era and look forward, even if it means stealing the winning strategy deployed by Democrats in the 2008 election.
"You can't beat something with nothing, and the other side has something. I don't like it, but they have it, and we have to be respectful and mindful of that," Mr. Bush said.
The former president's brother, often mentioned as a potential candidate in 2012, said President Obama's message of hope and change during the 2008 campaign clearly resonated with Americans.
"So our ideas need to be forward looking and relevant. I felt like there was a lot of nostalgia and the good old days in the [Republican] messaging. I mean, it's great, but it doesn't draw people toward your cause," Mr. Bush said.

Let's look at what they are literally doing. The listening tour thing...starts in a democratic stronghold. Why? To win democrat votes all the while losing their base.
They are trying to destroy the GOP by forcing a split. So many here want to work through the GOP and/or win back the GOP of old, but perhaps we do need to take their clue regarding the GOP being relegated to the era of nostalgia.
1. We need to be protesting these guys at their “listening tours stops.”
2. We need to speak out loud and clear that they do not represent us.
3. And their continued plan to destroy the GOP revealed for what it is.
4. Start forming a new party. Yeah...I said that. We have until 2012 to resurrect from the ashes of the GOP a strong party to replace the GOP.
(but jeeze they are so much better than the TOTUS.)
but Jeb, you have it all wrong....we need to be conservative you @$$hole....not more liberal.
(What a mistake it was for Reagan to pick papa as his running mate.)
The Democrats had one thing in 08... a campaign slogan. A great vast majority of people who voted knew nothing.. zip, zilch, nada, about the politics, ideas, principles, or even the person... they elected what was the fad. Like it or not, it’s a fad driven society. Fads fade, become unpopular, and people move on.
“Hope and Change”
That’s what they elected.. a slogan.
I would welcome a JFK.
what the Dhimmicrats are doing is resurrecting FDR...the marxist who prolonged the great depression for a decade to get his socialist agenda in place.
Maybe somebody can explain something to me...
In general, conservatism is a winning philosophy. And when republicans give up that philosophy, they tend to lose to the dems, who are liberal. But then weak minded republicans seem to think, “hey, the liberals won last time, maybe I should try to be liberal too, and maybe the voters will like me.” But then the republicans lose by an even greater margin, because they have alienated their conservative base AND liberals don’t want to vote for someone they see as coming “late for the party,” especially when they know there’s no question about the liberal leanings of the dems. So, the republicans try to even move farther to the left, as they push their supporters to the side, hoping to gain support from the last people on earth who would ever vote for them...
Where am I wrong here?
Mark
Jeb,
We just had a listening opportunity for you RINOs. It was held all over the country. It was called Tea Parties! Weren’t you listening?????
Well, this is the first time I’ve heard a Pubbie equate principles and morals to ‘nostalgia’... That’s an interesting, but wrongheaded, notion.
If Jeb and his folks want to build a ‘new’ GOP, more power to them. But, those of us who believe in the founding principles of this great nation, and those of us who work hard to lead a moral life and deal with the world ethically, will likely not be joining that dog and pony road show.
It’s time to take back the country.
they had more than a slogan....they had stock manipulation by Soros and others destroy peoples 401Ks.....they had an illegal organization known as ACORN terrorize people in certain area to get out the vote.....
and In every election the majority of people who vote are pretty much morons....
Telling the GOP that it isn’t serious about cutting government is not “nostalgia,” and it’s not a threat. It’s just giving a simple truth. These losers are erecting a straw man. I’m sure they’ll be able to knock it down as they “find” the future of more government, more immigration, and continued deafness.
“Nostaligia” for “messaging?”
Can anyone identify the problem with about 50 percent to 75 percent of GOP politicians?
The Bush’s have ALWAYS hated the Reagans. At this point they are also just jealous that we still love Reagan while we hate them for destroying the party.
It’s obvious that the Bushes—and RINOs like them—are really demrats by another name. Like Specter, they should join the demrat party and be done with it.
What purpose does the GOP serve it its RINOs just want to be like demrats? None, of course. If I wanted to vote demrat why wouldn’t I simply vote for a demrat candidate.
Jeb’s position makes about as much sense as his governorship of Florida. The man was so dumb he almost lost Florida to the dems in “Ws” first campaign. Had no clue what the demrats were up to. And he never did get a handle on Florida education or the tragi-comedy called DYFS in his state.
Dear Jeb,
No.
Sincerely,
Me
Well said. What we lacked was someone who believed in the message to head up the ticket. This isn't a failure of the message.
Juan McCainindez was less than stellar and had all of the charisma of a pair of moldy gym socks. His only redeeming action was appointing Palin as Veep candidate.
“I felt like there was a lot of nostalgia and the good old days in the [Republican] messaging. I mean, it’s great, but it doesn’t draw people toward your cause,” Mr. Bush said.”
It doesn’t draw people because that message has not been used by you, your brother, or your father. You three received the benefit of Reagan’s work, but did nothing to preserve or advance it.
Only a couple of years back there were posters here who were saying that “yeah, W is pretty pathetic, but you can rely on Jeb—he’s the real conservative in the family”, just as W boosters had confidently told us in 2000 that W was not like his old man but was a real conservative. Yeah, right.
The only truth I have heard come out of the mouth of Jesse Hi-Jackson is “stay outta da Bushes.” Jeb’s idiotic blather confirms the wisdom of that statement.
The former president’s brother, often mentioned as a potential candidate in 2012, said President Obama’s message of hope and change during the 2008 campaign clearly resonated with Americans.”
******
So Jeb thinks smoke and mirrors is what the pubbies really need as opposed to solid conservative values and principles. Hope and change is yesterday’s news and nothing more than some slick hype by a well dressed snake oil salesman a large group of very gullible Americans bought hook line and sinker. Give it a couple years and let’s see how it resonates.
This type of thinking will relegate the republicans to permanent second fiddle status as nothing more than a bunch of me-too democrats.
