The Maoist government of Nepal has collapsed after a failed attempt to remove the country's right-wing army chief.
The cabinet bid to sack Gen Rookmangud Katawal prompted the second largest party, the centrist UML, to resign from the ruling coalition.
The Himalayan country is emerging from a 10 year civil war which ended with a ceasefire in 2006. Last year the former Maoist rebels won national elections and formed a coalition government.
But the peace process is now stuck on the issue that sparked the latest crisis the integration of former Maoist fighters into the traditionally conservative national army.
General Katawal is regarded as political conservative and has been accused of resisting government control of the army and failing to abide by the commitments of the 2006 peace agreement.
However, many fear that if former rebels joined the army the force would become politically radicalised, as the Maoists have tried to do with other institutions.
Neighbouring India, which has considerable influence in Nepal, has backed Gen Katawal in his long running differences with the government.
The cabinet moved yesterday to sack Gen Katawal for failing to carry out their demands but he refused to step down and called a meeting of his fellow generals. Yesterday, Gen Katawal appeared to be still in control of the army.

so... how’s that ‘change’ going for you?
(i love asking that question of liberals when things go wrong)
Chinese intervention a factor here?
right-wing army chief
right-wing extremist army chief??
“The Maoist government of Nepal has collapsed after a failed attempt to remove the country’s right-wing army chief”
the only “conservative” newspaper in UK here, bemoaning this “right-winger”
Those responsible for the attempted sack have now been sacked.
It’s in the bag, Jack!
Prachanda cancels visit to China amid deepening Nepal crisis - April 25, 2009
Line the traitors up and shoot them.
Its making a statement of fact. Is the term ‘right wing’ not politically correct enough for you?
You’re the guy that thinks the uk standard BBC leftist propaganda show “have i got news for you” is fronted by a “Tory Anarchist”
Honestly, you need to realize that your idea of politics is messed up. It’s like a rehab thing. You need to admit you have a problem.
I’m glad you have enough of an idea to be hanging around here, but your worldview isn’t special, it isn’t interesting, and it isn’t clever. There’s no such thing as a tory anarchist; even if there were, Hislop isn’t one, and the Telegraph is a f****** joke.
You’re not going to accept that right now, but give it some thought, you might find I’m right.
Telegraph carried an column after Cheney accidentally shot that guy with some ultra-leftist twat ecstatic about this “blue on blue” shooting. The Telegraph is NOT a conservative newspaper. It’s the highest-circulation daily because people THINK it is, but like yourself and Vanders9, they are misled.
Have a nice day.
General Katawal has always been loyal to king Gyanendra of Nepal who is a hard leftist.
The Himalayan country is emerging from a 10 year civil war which ended with a ceasefire in 2006. Last year the former Maoist rebels won national elections and formed a coalition government. But the peace process is now stuck on the issue that sparked the latest crisis â the integration of former Maoist fighters into the traditionally conservative national army.Silly -- get the list of the Maoists to be integrated into the army, then go after them in the night, and kill every last one of the bastards. Problem solved.
Don’t forget to take your blood pressure tablets and breath deeply...
In what sense was he a ‘hard leftist’? He came accross to me as a ‘hard traditionalist’ who seemed to want to turn the clock back to the 17th century with a good ol’ fashioned absolute monarchy.
And in a monarchy, an army officer who remains steadfastly loyal to the monarch could not really be described as a ‘leftist’ for doing so. If anything, it is right-wing because it is an extremely conservative thing to do in a country that has had a political culture of a monarchy that takes an active role in politics....
that attitude explains perfectly why britain is in the state it’s in. perfectly.
and you are a “british conservative”, and that’s the best they’ve got, which is why they’re f*****.
The trouble is you equate British Conservatism with American Conservatism. There is nothing about being a British conservative that makes one have any reverence for politicians, never mind foreign ones, which is why the Telegraph is perfectly at home mocking an American conservative politician for shooting his friend in the face.
‘Tory Anarchism’ may well sound oxymoronic, but it describes a brand of British Conservatism which is conservative and supports British institutions, whilst at the same time being rather cynical, openly critical and mocking of the people who are part of those institutions, even if they are conservatives. If you asked Ian Hislop, he would probably if he was being honest say he supported the monarchy and voted Conservative, but that wouldn’t stop him taking the piss out of them....
