Swine Flu — It’s Not the Killer You Think It Is

Marc Siegel, M.D.

FOX News Medical Contributor/Associate Professor, NYU School of Medicine/Author, “False Alarm; the Truth About the Epidemic of Fear and Bird Flu: Everything You Need to Know About the Next Pandemic”

I was listening to a conference call on Friday, organized by the NYC Health Department about — you guessed it — swine flu (now known as H1N1). The discussion centered around “Influenza-like illness” and it was soon clear to me that…

1) It is a late influenza season this year and some of these illnesses are from the garden-variety mild influenza B.

2) A lot of the so-called “influenza cases” are really just reports by worried people with the sniffles. When all is said and done, it is looking more and more like H1N1 (a designation which describes two proteins on the surface of the flu virus which help it spread) will end up being a mild, over-hyped virus despite the fact that it is new.

"In the current swine flu scare the virus is assumed to be a more powerful human killer than it actually is. In reality it appears to losing virulence as it spreads human to human and is not that transmissable, and is NOT becoming widespread."

As I described in my book “False Alarm; the Truth About the Epidemic of Fear,” there is a history of hysterical ovverreaction to health risks in this country especially as evidenced by the swine flu fiasco of 1976, SARS in 2003 and the bird flu scare in 2005...

AIDS; WORDS FROM THE FRONT

By Bryan Ellison

Spin Dec. 1993

Since 1949, the Epidemic Intelligence Service has infiltrated hospitals, health departments, and newspaper offices around the world. Bryan Ellison exposes how this elite, semi-secret wing of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has managed to stifle debate about everything from swine flu to AIDS...

The cold, hard fact is that Mexico shut down everything ~ even taco stands ~ and they have a two week period that has two holidays where people ordinarily go to the beach, etc.

BY dispersing the population they reduce personal contact tremendously and hope to deprive the new virus of easy access to more people.

Still, some viruses will hold on until Fall and when the people get back together, it'll start killing some.

So, from the virus' point of view it's just a matter of time. From the Mexican's point of view they know they're putting off the inevitable. From the TV news point of view IT'S OVER.

One thing Fur Shur you really shouldn't buddy up with a virus.

Well, I think we are of accord on this one.

“Regular” flue killed 56,000 in 2006 — this “pandemic” somewhere in the 17-40 range. Not thousands, just 17 to 40.

We need to start holding public health officials accountable for creating these panics!

This administration? Everything is some else’s fault.

It is amazing seeing an entire government unfolding based on my ex-wife’s morals.

We need to start holding public health officials accountable for creating these panics!

They've been positively salivating at the possibility of a pandemic few for a least the past three years. Hype keeps the grant money flowing, right?

Everything you say is important to state plus, if I might, by next fall, it could mutate again into a killer. The usual trend of mutation is toward less severe forms to survive and spread, but there are certainly no guarantees that something nasty could come out of this strain in Mexico or New York or anywhere for that matter.

I disagree, it appears to be as transmissible as regular influenza.

But I agree about the lack of exhibited virulence.

You're citing the number of lab tests that demonstrated the dead guys had died of this virus ~ which is not the same as the number of dead.

The testing demonstrated several things. One of those things is that IT CAN KILL PEOPLE. I think that's important to know.

Now, can it kill me? Well, I hope not so I will avoid the virus. But, can it kill you?

Do you think I care?

Maybe ~ a little ~ but think about it, do you think that FOX TV news guy cares if you die anyway?

Wouldn't bet the farm on it eh.

Here's something for you to think about ~ presuming you haven't studied much Mexican history (which even Mexicans don't study).

Since 1515 they've had over 75,000,000 people die from hanta viruses.

That averages out over time to about 152,000 per year ~ exclusive of flu.

Virtually no one died of hanta virus in the United States over the last year. At the same time we should be concerned. At least I am even if you aren't.

The vast overreaction to this virus and its potential has severe economic consequences as it did previously in 1976, 2003, and 2006.

There is one underlying theme in every single action and word coming out of this administration. They all hurt the economy. 0bama is an economic 9/11.

This can't be accurate... Good ol' Joe - the tough guy his is - told us not to fly on planes or ride on trains! He implied it's
ONE BILLION TIMES WORSE
than any flu virus before!

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

Yes, the present strain is probably not so severe, most of the deaths in Mexico are probably due to secondary infections. Unfortunately, there should not be a flu in Mexico now, so when it co-infects someone with our old friend the avian flu or the ordinary flu in the Southern hemisphere it might become ugly. However, this will give us time to make a vaccine.
