More than 400 schools closed, 140 US flu cases

President Barack Obama voiced hope Friday that the swine flu virus will run its course "like ordinary flus" as officials reported more than two dozen new cases and scores more schools shut down.

The government issued new guidance for schools with confirmed cases, saying they should close for at least 14 days because children can be contagious for seven to 10 days from when they get sick. That means parents can expect to have children at home for longer than previously thought.

The Education Department said that more than 400 schools had closed, affecting about 245,000 children in 18 states. That was about 100 more schools reported closed than reported on Thursday.

Major U.S. airlines, meanwhile, announced plans to curtail flights into flu-ravaged Mexico.

"I'm optimistic that we're going to be able to manage this effectively," Obama told reporters as he received an update from his Cabinet on the federal response to the health emergency. At the same time, he emphasized that the federal government is preparing as if the worst is still to come so that it won't be caught flat-footed.

Obama's fresh take on the flu scare — more intense in neighboring Mexico than in the United States but also present in some measure around the globe — came as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the virus has been confirmed in eight more U.S. states and seems to be spreading.

Confirmed cases have risen from 109 Thursday to 141 Friday, the CDC said, with the flu now reported in 19 states, up from 11. Separately, a few states reported slightly higher numbers, and the District of Columbia announced its first two probable cases. The U.S. death toll remained at one — the Mexican toddler who visited Texas with his family and died there.

And just think. All doctor notes to employers have to be printed by computer. Have you tried writing N1H1 by hand? People are going to be absent due to what looks like hini.

I used to try to figure out who the character Flagg was based on. King is strange and very left.

Look, if you don’t get it, I’ll explain. Bambi wants every one to stay home and not gather so he can do his deeds. The media is in on this with Bambi. That is why they spread this lie about the stupid flu.

Ignore it all, do not panic like lemmings, and keep on doing whatever you need to do.

The 141 US cases currently reported by the CDC does not have any cases in Tennessee. But at least three cases have been confirmed by TN state labs. The LA Times is saying the count is up to 162 and they are mentioning cases in TN.

Obama’s plan... Close schools not the border.

Well, since most schools are public schools, that's a great idea.

I just don’t get it. We’ve had flu outbreaks in our local schools every year. We’ve had as much as 25% absent in primary, high school, and university. The schools have never been closed for any illness, or even lice or scabies epidemics. What is so different this time? This flu seems pretty mild, comparatively.

I caught flu last year from students at the university where I work. Missed a week of work and had to bring in a doctor’s excuse when I came back. The doctor didn’t want to see me and FAXed over the excuse. By then there was no one in the office to pick up the FAX because they all had the flu. I got to be the sole person for the next week covering the entire office. No one even thought of closing the school. We did cancel a few classes when the profs were sick, or else I handed out assignments and collected them, but we stayed open.

I just don’t understand why closing the school is necessary. Do they think all those kids and their parents are going to stay in their houses and not expose anyone else or get exposed themselves during their vacation?
