(Seattle) -- Girls and women who receive the Gardasil vaccine to prevent cervical cancer may be at increased risk of a rare but serious disorder of the nervous system in the first few weeks after getting their shots, researchers report.
Overall, the vaccine does not raise the odds of developing Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), a disorder of the peripheral nervous system, says Nizar Souayah, MD, of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark.
But there is clear evidence from our database of an increased incidence of Guillain-Barre syndrome in the first six weeks, especially the first two weeks, after vaccination, he tells WebMD.

I don't care how small the chance is for something like this to happen. The liberals are trying to enforce the message that by taking this vaccine your child can have all the sex she wants *at a very young age* and there won't be repurcussions!
They pushed this drug waaaaaaaay too early before all the research was in. I hope there's a huge class action suit from those families whose daughters DID develop GBS!
FDA screams at people today not to take Hydroxycut - 1 death attributed to it so far after over a decade on the market.
FDA is such a warped twisted hypocrite-filled org.
At the same time they sit on their hands with respect to tobacco. There's too much money at stake.
I’m as skeptical of the advantages and possible side effects of this medication as anyone. I do however hope this study is sound, and not some idiot group or another trying to take the manufacturer down. If Gardasil is indeed a problem medication, then go for it.
I was very leery when they started urging all young women to get this vaccine. The commercials used to give me great cause for concern.
If I had a young daughter when this first came out, I wouldn’t have wanted her to get the vaccine in the first five years or so. If she wanted to later on, we’d be able to look at the statistics, and make a more educated decision.
I remember when this first came out, and those who urged caution were soundly criticized for their cavalier attitude when it came to womens’ health. Well, maybe not so cavalier after all if this study has merit.
Yeah, Ephedra killed only 40 people, almost all of them who were taking steroids also, or had serious heart conditions, yet they yanked that too. Meanwhile Tylenol kills 1,200 people every single year.
There’s a chance of Guillain-Barre Syndrome with most any vaccine. The swine flu vaccination campaign back in the late 70s was responsible for a number of GBS cases and there was a lot of press about it at the time. GBS is a result of an immune response after a viral infection where your body’s immune system attacks your nerves.
It’s similar in effect to polio, although most people recover from GBS eventually (and it often involves months of physical therapy). Recovery is seldom 100%, but once you get back 80%-90% of nerve function you can get around about as well as you once did.
I came down with GBS a couple of weeks after an upper respiratory infection. It doesn’t involve a specific virus, just about any virus can result in GBS (or rather can trigger your bodies immune response, which can lead to GBS).
A couple of weeks ago, there was a frontpage Washed-upPost article about whether Gardisil should be also given to boys. FYI.
i don't... nobody put a gun to these parents' heads... they are just a stupid as the politicians who pushed for this...
That isn't the message at all. This is about women's health--the benefits of preventing cervical cancer will last for the rest of her life.
I got married when I was 19. Ten years later, I got the beginning stages of cervical cancer. It was a horrible experience. First, I had a doctor calling me to tell me the test result--a result I normally receive in the mail. I immediately assumed I was going to die. The surgery was painful. I was lucky, it was caught before it spread. However, the fear that I have every time I get tested now is as strong as ever. If this vaccine saves one woman from going through what I went through, it's worth it.
I don't normally put up such personal stuff, but in this case, I think people are spouting off without really thinking. Almost thirty years later, I'm still married to the same man. It's not like I've been promiscuous...
Sorry to hear about your experience!
From everything I’ve heard and read, though—you have to be sexually active to develop HPV (CDC website)—when they tried to make this a law in Texas, they had parents in interviews saying, oh, they’re gonna have sex anyway, let’s protect them the earlier the better!!!
Not with MY daughter, thank you very much. Now if it was aimed at 18 y/o’s and up, that’s different. But 9 year olds?!
NO WAY.
That's the same thing I read about the 1976 swine flu vaccine. From the article: "Mass vaccinations started in October, but within weeks reports started coming in of people developing Guillain-Barré syndrome, a paralyzing nerve disease, right after taking the shot. Within two months, 500 people were affected, and more than 30 died."
How weird is that!!
