A worker at Radio Shack was arrested for punching a customer.

Officers arrested 52-year-old James Knol of Eau Claire on Sunday night for disorderly conduct and battery.

According to the police report, 56-year-old Leigh Carey was trying to return something at the Radio Shack on Clairemont Avenue.

Carey told investigators Knol wouldn't let him, so he asked to talk to a manager.

That's when he says Knol started punching him and a witness called 911.

Knol is due in court May 19.

I punch Radio Shack employees every time they ask for my telephone number.

It was all a misunderstanding. The customer just wanted his “Battery of the Month” card punched.

LOL—I gave my address to Radio Shack as 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in DC. The clerk didn’t even blink.

I once gave one my name as T. E. Sticle. No reaction from him. I wonder if he got it after I left :-)

I had about 400 regular customers in that store. It didn't hurt that I had a First Class Radiotelephone license and Advanced Class Amateur license at the time. I had no problem giving good advice and my customers had no problem returning for more goods. I left the position at Radio Shack to take a field service technician position caring for all the electronics on 180 tuna boats, 14 base stations plus assorted yachts, work boats and merchant ships. It was an enjoyable job that honed my troubleshooting skills. When the "dolphin safe tuna" silliness drove the tuna fleet to New Zealand, I moved to Pacific Bell as a Toll Equipment engineer and taught a microprocessor class at Southwestern College to earn a little extra income in the evenings.

As someone who’s worked retail for several years, he’s definitely NOT a hero.

I thought the same exact thing when I read the headline. I have worked retail as a second or full-time job since the age of 15, and some customers definitely deserve this.

They should call it “Cell Phone Shack”, since 70% of their retail floorspace is devoted solely to that.

I sold the first 10 TRS80 Model I computers in San Diego. That was in early September 1977. I should have purchased one myself, but I waited until 1980 to trade my Model 19 teletype for a Heathkit H8 computer. I found a H9 terminal (40x12 upper case only) in the paper. It took an evening to wire wrap a board with extra static RAM and a new character generator ROM. Voila! 80x24 with upper/lower case. Eventually, I found a used H19 terminal. While pining for the nice graphics in the first Mac, I paid a visit to the Jameco electronics store in San Jose. In a few days I had a TI-9918A graphics processor interfaced the the H8. A couple with weeks with a copy of the graphics book by Foley and Van Dam...voila...graphics. It was primitive, but I learned how to actually write the code and interface the hardware. That was more fun than just being an appliance operator.

Something tells me that Knol does not have a future in customer service.

Yeah, but he'd be perfect working for the Obama Administration, scheduling Air Force One photo ops...

I don't shop at Radio Schlock anymore.

I hate their policy of asking for address and phone number. Usually, the staff is no great shakes either.
