Not an american citizen who contracted the flu.

It sure did not take long for the usual group to start dancing on a dead Mexican baby. We can agree that the Mexican government is corrupt. Will this same group celebrate when American students that visited Cozumel and Cancun start dieing? Such behavior shames FR.

Well don’t limit it to just Government... There are TONS of FReepers who are taking a potentially deadly cavalier attitude toward this even NOW when we know far more than the Govt knew 8 weeks ago. Ignorance will cause deaths. And conversely, panic will cause deaths.

But remember, the Govt can’t save us, just like it couldn’t (and shouldn’t) have saved people from Katrina. It is up to each of us as individuals to protect ourselves. What the Govt can and should have done is what you said - travel warnings, restrictions, and border closings. Beyond that, it’s up to us as individuals.

Only 7 swine flu deaths, not 152, says WHO

April 29, 2009 - 4:34PM

A member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has dismissed claims that more than 150 people have died from swine flu, saying it has officially recorded only seven deaths around the world.
Mexico has lowered its confirmed death toll from swine flu from 20 to seven, Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova told reporters. He also raised the toll of “probable’’ deaths from the H1N1 virus from 152 to 159. A total of 1311 people remain in hospital after exhibiting symptoms of the flu, he said.

Vivienne Allan, from WHO’s patient safety program, said the body had confirmed that worldwide there had been just seven deaths - all in Mexico - and 79 confirmed cases of the disease.

“Unfortunately that [150-plus deaths] is incorrect information and it does happen, but that’s not information that’s come from the World Health Organisation,” Ms Allan told ABC Radio today.

“That figure is not a figure that’s come from the World Health Organisation and, I repeat, the death toll is seven and they are all from Mexico.”

Ms Allan said WHO had confirmed 40 cases of swine flu in the Americas, 26 in Mexico, six in Canada, two in Spain, two in Britain and three in New Zealand.

Ms Allan said it was difficult to measure how fast the virus was spreading.

She said a real concern would be if the flu virus manifested in a country where a person had had no contact with Mexico, and authorities were watching all countries for signs of that.

“There is no pattern that has emerged at this stage to be able to say that it is spreading in a particular way or it is spreading into a particular country ... the situation is continuing to evolve,” she said.

She said the WHO was not recommending against overseas travel, but urged those who felt sick to stay home and others to ensure they kept their hands clean.

No decision had yet been made about vaccinations.

“This virus is not airborne, it’s caused by droplets ... so it’s not a time for worry. It’s a time to be prepared,” Ms Allan said.

Crude oil price drops

Oil prices dipped in Asia today as concern that a swine flu outbreak could undermine crude demand overrode optimism about an eventual recovery from a global slump.

Benchmark crude for June delivery was down 39 cents to $49.53 a barrel by midday in Singapore, in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract Tuesday fell 22 cents to settle at $49.92.

On further reflection, if I wanted to start an epidemic, or panic which could be just as useful, I’d do it in southern Texas and at a time the snowbirds were returning home to all parts of the US and Canada. It’s a bit late in that cycle now, but the yearly migration is not over yet.

I did not read it as dancing on grave of dead baby, rather that since child is from Mexico, may have already been ill and not the same as a US citizen, living here, contracting the flu and dying...possibly not as serious as media sounding by saying, “first US death”.

Wow! You’re offended by someone posting a fact? How in any way is that dancing on a dead Mexican baby?

RGS simply pointed out the fact that the deceased in not an American citizen. Get a grip.

In the USA 100 people die from the flu each day on average.

This is the full year average but almost all flu deaths happen in the winter and spring. We should be seeing ~200 deaths per day at this time of year.

NAPOLITANO announces on Live TV just now, in Senate hearing, that SHE IS NOT GOING TO CLOSE THE BORDER WITH MEXICO (i.e. border crossings). Says "science", "the CDC" and "The World Health Organization" does not merit it at this time.

I think the major difference is the age group the death from the swine flu will come from. While there may be deaths associated with the flu yearly in the US, it is primarily the elderly who is hit the hardest by it. With this strain - it is pretty much everyone, and that is the scary part about this.

I don't think we have enough information to say this yet. Just remember how bad the reporting of SARS was. They were saying the death rate was 90% when it was actually a small fraction of that.

I have heard that people back then lavished less attention on their kids. It was sort of a safeguard against too much heartbreak if they were to die. The extreme nurturing is kind of a modern fancy for those who have the luxury to.

We have so much going for us we don’t even realize.

Since I'm old enough to remember the 1976 charlie foxtrot, I won't be the first in line for the new vaccine.

The 1976 vaccination resulted in the deaths of 0.0000625% of those receiving the vaccine. Not exactly a terrifying risk.
