Build The Fence (Duncan D.Hunter)

If you listen to the mainstream media, the swine flu pandemic, at least in the United States, is being spread by tourists and college students returning from spring break. Little or no mention is made of the thousands of illegal aliens streaming across our border from Mexico, some undoubtedly bringing with them more than a desire for a better life.

Nearly two years ago we warned that one of the consequences of illegal immigration was the reemergence of diseases long thought to be vanquished. Among the infections being spread were a drug-resistant form of tuberculosis and an outbreak of dengue fever in Webb County, Texas.

(snip)

It seems to us that a real border fence would go a long way toward addressing all these issues. To that end, Rep. Duncan Hunter, who represents San Diego, has introduced legislation to speed up completion of the long-planned and poorly executed border fence system authorized by Congress in the Secure Fence Act of 2006.

It has been reported that the fence is nearly complete, with some 600 of the planned 700 miles of actual fence built. But according to Joe Kasper, a spokesman for Hunter, the 600 figure is "misleading because over half the infrastructure along the border consists of vehicle barriers, which do not limit illegal foot traffic."

Hunter proposes 350 miles more of real fencing — the kind used so successfully in the San Diego border sector. The two-tier fence in San Diego runs 14 miles along the border with Tijuana, Mexico.

The first layer is a high steel fence, with an inner high anti-climb fence with a no-man's land in between. It has been amazingly effective.

While the Cornyns of the world endorse traitors like Specter, and the GOP dingbats like Kay Bailey worked to undermine Duncan Hunter's 2006 Secure Fence Act, Duncan D. Hunter is going to find it a hard slog trying to follow in his father's footsteps to secure the border...

With a real fence, the threat of a failed state in Mexico, cross-border violence, the two-way transit of guns and drugs, and the spread of infectious disease could all be greatly reduced, if not eliminated.

We could all breathe a lot easier.

what a lot are missing is the health tourism aspect, if it gets worse in Mexico, you will see people stream across the border for health reasons. if they see they can get healthcare for free, expect a deluge... It happens all the time in Europe.

Cornyn is just following Reagan’s doctrine of “Speak no ill about fellow Republicans”. Kay however, is pandering to the messkins, hoping to get their vote for Gov.
.
As I have said before regarding our gubernatorial race, while I don’t much care for our Gov GoodHair I prefer him to someone who has been wallowing in Washington DC politics for the last decade. Kay is a nice person but I’m afraid she is too steeped in comity to stand up for Texas.

“Speak no ill about fellow Republicans”.

That BS went out the window 8 years ago!

If there was a mile-high fence at the border and perfect blocking of all illegal immigrants...

We’d still have the same swine flu problem in the US we have now.

There’s FAR more daily legal travel between the countries, including air travel, etc., than illegal travel.

Given that you’re sick with the flu one day after exposure, air travel is a far, far, far more effecient vector of the flu than someone trying to walk across the border or swim the Rio Grande or something - as we’ve already seen in the US.

Illegal immigration was likely completely irrelevant as a disease vector for this flu. But I guess people want to exploit a tragedy to make political hay.

Meanwhile, Raul Grijalva has introduced legislation that would, in effect, prevent the construction of any more fence. See:

Guess you are right, Strategerist. The Swine Flu is already here - so don’t bother about closing the borders.

We have nothing more to fear from the illegal influx. (Like incurable TB, child molestation, rape, murder, gangs, drug cartel, DUI’s - killing whole families, identify theft, “entitlement” with our tax dollars in food stamps, subsidised housing, free education, birthright citizenship, overloading our Emergency Rooms. The Dems want their votes, don’cha know?)

Thanks Stratergerist. I’m glad you consider the envasion our country is under, as “Political Hay”! Geesh!

But I guess people want to exploit a tragedy to make political hay.

I guess it matters which people will use this swine flu outbreak to make political hay to you. Representative Hunter is using this as an example of the potential problems that will continue to exist until we have a secure border and a SANE immigration policy. And it is even more important now that we have a Congress and a President that can ram just about any legislature through that they want to.

Illegal immigration may not be the main disease vector here, but just let the Obama Administration pass their insane Universal Healthcare crap, couple that with a massive outbreak in Mexico and an open border, and you will see a bigger flood of people coming in to our country, potentially carrying the disease.

“Illegal immigration was likely completely irrelevant as a disease vector for this flu. But I guess people want to exploit a tragedy to make political hay.”

....likely completely irrelevant? Well, it’s a bit difficult to tell, isn’t it, since they come when they wish by the thousands every day and are never checked for disease! We have more than enough proof that illegal aliens have reintroduced many diseases to us that we had wiped out years ago...Chaugus, TB, whooping cough.....and on and on.

Political hay? Securing the country is political hay?
