“This will make it easier to defeat him in the next election. By a Republican.”

No, the RNC will still promote him... /s

Th first point, as others have already pointed out, is he may finally be making official what his true status has been for years - a Liberal in hiding, pretending to be a “moderate” Republican; which he never was.

The second point has nothing to do with the Senate, per se. It has to do with that fact that Toomey is way ahead of him in the polls for the GOP primary for his seat. Sensing defeat, he hopes to do better, FOR HIMSELF, as a Democrat.

The third point is that we can expect a lot of moral blather from him, telling lies, about how “the GOP abandoned him”.

The fourth point IS the senate, and its role in judges, spending & treaties. He’s going to NOW run, in Pennsylvania, as the unashamed Liberal he is, and set a course in the Senate to convince Liberal Pennsylvanian’s of that.

True to what Arlen has always been, he’s putting himself, and no particular principal, first.

While I don’t like it being filibuster proof, it does place all the blame on Dems going forward.

KFI Radio in LA mentioned this on the 9:00 news update. They said Arlin is “in talks” to switch parties but did not mention their source.

So, ole Arlen just switches parties when it suits him. He doesn’t like the way the wind is blowing, poof, switch parties. Sounds like it’s all about him winning instead of governing. Who knew? /s

Do the Republicans in PA who voted for him (me included) in the last election have any recourse over a move like this? Can he be recalled? The state of PA voted to have a Republican in the Senate, not a Democrat.

I do not like Specter, but I voted for him in 2004 because it was important to me that Republicans maintain as many Senate seats as possible to support Bush in the WOT.

Finally, he decides to do the paper work on an event that happened years ago. I guess he wont have to pay his taxes next year like the other democrats.

Won’t do him any good because the Dems and unions are mad about card check. They won’t support him.

His problem is that if he loses the primary to Tooney, then he’s lost. He cannot thereafter run as an independent. Whereas if he switches to Democrat before the primary process he has a chance to retain his seat.

If he switches, I’m guessing part of the deal will be that the Dem leadership insures that he runs unopposed in the Dem primary, and that ACORN does what’s needed to ensure he wins the election.

This was my read as well. Looks like Toomey has got him beat.

We need to remember that the RNC was backing him, and that many Republicans gave him campaign money , that he will now spend to run as a Democrat. We need to know the names of those RINO’s backing Spectre and save whatever funds we were going to send them.

It should be required that anyone switching parties while serving their term should step down and seek election in his new party.

Changing the balance like Specter is doing...sucks.
