U.S. newspaper circulation declines worsen

NEW YORK (Reuters) – If there's one thing that the U.S. public is not giving newspapers, it's their support.

Paid weekday newspaper circulation in the six-month period that ended March 31 fell 7 percent to 34.4 million, compared with the same period last year, according to new figures released by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC).

That decline, which tracked 395 daily newspapers that had five-day-a-week circulation in both periods, accelerated from last year's decline of 3.6 percent.

Sunday circulation at 557 papers fell more than 5 percent to 42.1 million. Last year, circulation fell 4.6 percent.

The declines may seem small, but the numbers tell a troubling story about the state of American newspapers.

Paid circulation has been trickling downward for several years, according to ABC figures.

While readership is up thanks to people sharing copies of their printed editions and readers on the Internet, advertisers continue to rely on paid circulation figures to determine what they want to pay to newspaper publishers to advertise.

As circulation continues to fall, more advertisers grow disenchanted with newspapers and seek other ways to get their message across to potential customers.

“If there’s one thing that the U.S. public is not giving newspapers, it’s their support.”

Considering the newspapers hate the (silent) majority of the U.S. public then the sooner the papers die the better.

Millions of trees will be saved.

These eff’ers think I am going to pay money to read about the endless plight of illegals, “Bush Hitler”, how our troops are killers, why Islam is misunderstood, why white people are just so evil, why gays are persecuted and ENDLESS other lefty propaganda?

I hope the few consrvative papers that exist survive but my Wall Street Journal sub expires NEVER to be renewed again. Too Obama friendly and insanely pro-illegal alien. Goodbye WSJ and goodbye sister paper Barrons.

Why would it surprise you that the WSJ is pro illegal alien? Illegal aliens are near slaves and slaves make big business much more profitable.

It does not suprise me that WSJ is pro-illegal as is U.S. Chamber of Commerce. I put up with it but no more. The WSJ can drop dead. It has become fairly liberal and the writers are mainly first year journalism students anymore.

No discussion at all in the posted article as to the causes of the circulation declines.

Reuters could have easily fingered the recession as the cause, but for some reason neglected to do so. Of course, they would never have the guts to mention another major cause: the biased left-leaning slant to the reporting that has turned off so many who used to be regular readers.

Newspapers are ok in my book as a last resort when the only other thing to read in the doctor’s waiting room is a 20-year old worn copy of automotive news. Otherwise I make a point of not spending a penny on them. The timeliness of the Internet has obviously had a big effect on newspaper’s viability. Thinking people would still subscribe if the bias of the publishers weren’t appalling.

Amen. My shlocky local rag featured a huge editorial this Sunday praising Obama's "friendly gestures" towards Cuba and Chavez. They of course took a paragraph or two to bash Bush's "arrogant" stance towards those two countries and their crazy commie/socialist leaders.

All I have to say to papers like that is "see ya, wouldn't want to be ya."

Try Investor’s Business Daily. I admit 2 of the reporters are flaming libs but the 90% are conservative and pro-business/capitalist. A good number of their artciles how up on FR. It’s a hit or miss for me when it comes to WSJ, but overall, I don’t get my blood boiling like reading the LAT. The only thing section I read in the LAT is the business and sports section.

Priceless. They flail, they don’t know why people won’t read their ‘pearls of wisdom.’ We will decide what opinions to form. You report the facts. You have forgotten how to write a hard news story. All of you are so biased (over 90% are libs, vote dem) you can’t even see your bias anymore.

It’s over for MSM. Time to reset the media.

You can get rolls of blank newsprint at Staples. It's cheaper because it doesn't have all that writing on it.

Liberalism and leftist thinking can’t survive without government subsidies.

The only time I read these rags (sports only) is when I see one lying around in an airport. I won’t ever pay to read this garbage...I’ll read one for free but only the sports...

Thanks for the ping! The only time I have ever purchased a "news"paper in the last 15 years is when I move to a new area and am looking for info on local business and/or jobs.

No need to pay someone to lie to me!
