LUXEMBOURG - The European Union's health commissioner urged Europeans on Monday to postpone nonessential travel to the United States or Mexico due to swine flu.
EU Health Commissioner Andorra Vassiliou met with the EU foreign ministers on the subject as Spain reported the first confirmed case of swine flu in Europe. That was also the first swine flu case outside North America.

Other countries have quarantined those coming back from Mexico in order to makes sure, they do not carry the deadly form of the virus...if you had ever studied the 1917 pandemic, you would be more concerned.

This is a particularly silly thread.
Do you realize that this particular flu strain has been breeding in Asia for years now, just not yet passing between humans?
Do you realize it has been called “bird flu” as well as “swine flu?” It affects both species.
Do you realize that the “Spanish Flu” of 1918 was a bird flu?
Do you realize that birds are a vector? They spread the virus?
Have you ever tried to close a border to a bird?
The health care community — not just politicians — have been warning us for years that a pandemic is likely. This may be it, it may not.
But blaming open borders is just plain silly.

Look me up in 60 days and we'll talk about it.
That reminds me of the guy who wanted to gush about Obomba three days after the election. I told him to call me in six months and we'd talk then. Reminds me of a guy who changed his screenname every 30 days. : )
To: Jedidah
Thanks for the brief and inane history lesson.
That was then, this is now.
The flu is being spread by border crossings and not only those on foot....planes, cars, trucks.
Close the border now and deal with those that have slipped in.
And don't give me that bird crossing nonsense.

If you contract this swine flu, thank a politician! These borders should have been CLOSED years ago!Bush's Fault
Swine flu is Bush's fault--it was just a matter of time.
Thanks for the laugh to start my week. Go tell the kids back from their visits to Cancun that it's Bush's fault.

let me get this straight i (and others bust your comment about closing the border) and your only response is making fun because i made a typing error?
To: mplsconservative
You're apparently not much of a conservative and Bush isn't alone in the politically correct action of allowing millions of illegals to fester inside our borders, then turning his back on new ones slinking across.
I haven't visited a site on the internet labeled 'DU' but it seems you have. Tell us about what one would find there.

Fine. Now the Europeans who vacation or come for business in the U.S. are being asked to stay home. Can you imagine how this will affect not only our tourist industries, hotels and restaurants all over the country, and then, by trickle down and sideways, all those businesses doing business with THEM?
They're rockin' and reelin' ALREADY from the ecomonic turndown. All of US will be affected monitarily in some way from all this disaster forces on us by by politically-correct globalists and bleeding hearts in control of this administration. All industries in this country are dependent on other industries, even lowly travel and tourism.

While that may be true...illegal aliens are causing a re-emergence of illnesses we had eradicated. And there is no excuse for our borders having not been secured on 9/12.

It’s also a question of how much, or how widespread any dangerous, infectious disease might become in the US. Restricting travel now could definitely limit the number of US communities where this flu will be present until we understand how deadly it might be.
I agree that travel restrictions will (or at least can) slow the spreading of this infection a little bit down. but sooner or later it will reach the whole planet.

I’m not much of a conservative because I’m not bashing Bush for the swine flu? That’s crazy talk. I think you’re parsing words when you say you haven’t visited DU, because technically it is called democraticunderground, but you knew that.

Let's get the matter clarified.
Do you support open borders?
Do you support amnesty for those who entered the nation dishonestly?
(I could ask more, but these will serve as a qualifier.)
